Tour the Copake Iron Works Historic Site and Ride the Pomeroy Family Railroad

Details

Explore the Hudson Valley’s industrial heritage at the Copake Iron Works historic site, one of the most intact examples of 19th century industrial iron making in the northeast. Established in 1845 at the base of the Taconic Ridge, the site is home to more remaining buildings and structures than most other iron works of its era—as well as the first and only full-scale railroad operating in all of New York State’s 180 parks. The Pomeroy Family Railroad—built and run entirely by volunteers—replicates the narrow gauge railroad that circumnavigated the ironworks, transporting iron ore from the mine to the blast furnace. Passengers of all ages are invited to come aboard the train, which runs on a 950-foot-loop from 2-4pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Mondays through Columbus Day Weekend. The museum shares the same hours, but will be open through November 11th. Can’t make those hours? The site is open year-round during daylight hours for self-guided tours. Check out the Friends of Taconic State Park website for a free audio tour. No tickets or reservations required for any of the above!
