Visit the Birthplace of the Gay Rights Movement

An official Path Through History Site! The birthplace of the modern gay rights movement took place on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village in June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn. LGBTQ patrons stood up against the police raids to which they had regularly been subjected. Now the country’s first national monument dedicated to LGBTQ rights, the site includes the Stonewall Inn (which still operates as a local gay bar), Christopher Park with its Gay Liberation Monument and the surrounding streets where the events of June 1969 occurred.
