NYS Caledonia Fish Hatchery

An official Path Through History Site! Established in 1864 and purchased by New York State in 1870, this is the oldest Fish Hatchery in New York State and the Western Hemisphere. Created by Seth Green, who is known as the father of fish culture, who pioneered the use of hatcheries to rear fish. The hatchery is run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and according to their website, the hatchery rears brown trout and rainbow trout. Annual production is approximately 170,000 pounds. The Caledonia Fish Hatchery, also known as "Spring Brook" and the Seth Green State Hatchery, is a historic fish hatchery and national historic district that is the oldest fish hatchery in the Western Hemisphere.
