An official Path Through History Site! Port Jefferson was the largest shipbuilding center on Long Island (after the Brooklyn Navy Yard), having constructed over 500 ships from 1797 to 1922.  Its maritime history is unsurpassed anywhere else on Long Island, and is carefully preserved at the Mather House Museum, operated by the Port Jefferson Historical Society.  The main building is the mid 19th c. home of John Richard Mather, and then his son, John Titus Mather, one of the leading shipbuilding families.  The grounds also house a Sail Loft (Port Jefferson's most famous sailmaker, Reuben H. Wilson made the sails for the America, first winner of the America's Cup.), Tool Shed, the modest mid 19th c. Dedio House and a Clock Museum.  In addition to the museum complex, the waterfront is still accessible for walking tours, and the last ship manufacturing building is now the Village Center.
