An official Path Through History Site! The US Military Academy at West Point is America's oldest military school and continuously occupied military post. West Point Cemetery served as a burial ground for American Revolutionary War soldiers and early West Point inhabitants long before 1817 when it was officially designated as a military cemetery. General Washington called its position the "key to America" during the Revolutionary War. In 1778, engineers for the Continental Army designed fortifications to stop British ships attempting to sail upriver, and an iron chain was stretched across the Hudson. Journey through American military history amid spectacular landscapes, on a guided tour of the nation's premier leadership institution and largest public collection of military artifacts in the western hemisphere. Beside the Hudson River, about 50 miles from NYC, visitors can take bus tours, visit the museum and visitor center gift shop (open daily to the public), and attend public sports events and concerts.
