Cunningham's Ski Barn

About Us

Cunningham's Ski Barn is the oldest ski shop in North America.  It was born out of a general store in North Creek, NY purchased by P.J. Cunningham, the state district Forest Ranger, in 1908.  As skiing started to gain popularity, people would come to the general store to have oak barrel staves fashioned into skis with bindings made of leather straps.  This was the first actual ski business done by P.J.  Soon a section of the general store was dedicated exclusively to ski equipment and thus CSB was born.  By the 1930's, Butler Cunningham (son of P.J.) was running the store.  In 1932, Butler attended the winter Olympics in Lake Placid and upon returning to North Creek, was one of the leaders who turned Gore Mountain into a ski area.  Butler was also president of the Gore Mountain Lift Co. which was founded in 1934.

Post Butler, CSB was run by his son, Patrick J. Cunningham for 50 years.  Pat was an accomplished ski racer and an Olympic hopeful, skiing on the European circuit in the 1960's, which later became the World Cup.  His Olympic dreams were never realized due to a broken arm that occurred right before the trials.  Today, the stores are owned & operated by his son, Tyler.  Tyler, an alumni of Burke Mountain Academy continued his ski racing career at St. Lawrence University.  After 15 years in the financial services industry in New York City, Tyler returned home to the Adirondacks and is proud to carry on the family legacy.
