                                                                 Hackensack River Ramps
Starting in late March, as the water temperatures rise, the striped bass start to make their migration up the Hudson River. This yearly spawning ritual has taken place at the same time each year since well before Henry Hudson sailed his Half-Moon sailing vessel up this majestic river. During this spawning run of striped bass, the recreational angler has the opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime. Striped bass up to 60 pounds are in the river along with 7 million smaller versions of the same fish. The spring run of stripers will begin to show up in the lower harbor in mid March and early April. As the warmer water works it’s way up the river, so go the striped bass. Because the west side of the river from the George Washington Bridge to the Piermont area is shallow, it warms up much faster than any other part. With this warm water calling, anglers can take advantage of the waters the striped bass use to pass through for some outstanding fishing.

Although many anglers along the Hudson River enjoy shoreline fishing, having a boat is the way to go. Being able to go from point to point, change locations easily, is a much more effective way to follow your fish.

Below is a listing of all the public boat ramps on the Hudson River from Liberty State Park in Jersey City up to Kingston. The information given is the best available and as current as possible. The rates quoted are from 1998 and could be subject to change. When ever possible, questions should be forwarded to the phone numbers listed for the appropriate ramp. Some phone calls to municipal clerk's offices were not particularly helpful. Some misled us. For example, in September, we called the Ossining ramp, the clerk thought the ramp was closed and did not know of any launching fees. We had to tell her it was open till October. Later that same day another clerk told us the ramp was open but they had seasonal permits only. The clerk at the Nyack office also had different fees for a partial season.

The information listed here is from various sources including our own personal research to specific ramps, interviews with various agencies, Embassy’s Waterproof Charts, and the popular boating magazine "Boating on the Hudson." Anyone interested in boating of any kind on the Hudson River should contact and subscribe to "Boating on the Hudson." The monthly magazine is of tremendous value to anyone concerned with the Hudson. A listing of contacts will be posted at the end of this listing of boat ramps.

Readers should be aware that this is a listing of only ramps that are available to the public. There are several private marinas that offer launching facilities for their members

If you know of any other ramps we may have missed, please send any details to ramps@hrfanj.org and we will post them.

New Jersey has only two public boat ramps on the Hudson River. Liberty State Park and Hazzards Ramp.

1. Liberty State Park Launch Ramp Jersey City, N. J.

West Shore

Off Exit 14B on the New Jersey Turnpike. One of the only two public boat ramps on the Jersey side of the Hudson River and it’s the best. The ramp is located at the south end of the Liberty State Park complex.

The ramp is doublewide with a fixed dock down the middle. The ramp also features a 56-foot floating dock at the south end of the ramp for tying up your boat. It is a concrete ramp in a sheltered cove, out of the main currents, winds, and wakes of the Hudson River. The ramp is wide open for maneuvering and has parking for well over 100 cars with trailers. There is no overnight parking permitted. The hours of operation are from 6 am to 10 pm from the 1st of April to October 31st. Lights are in the parking area and services are available in the main park area.

This is one of the favorite launching sites for HRFA members, and you will always see one of our boats using this facility. Stay in the marked channels at low tide. Rocks are very close to the south side of the channel on the way out to the Statue. At low tide you will go aground if you are outside the green buoys! Stay in the channel!!! There is no problem at low tide in the cove or in the channel.

Fees...Season permits $106.00 and daily passes are $9.75 with no residence restrictions.

Hazzard’s Ramp for 1999

GWramp.jpg (34288 bytes)

2. Hazzard’s Launch Ramp Fort Lee, N. J.

West Shore  Inside the Palisades Interstate Park.
Inside the Palisades Interstate Park at the Ross Dock Picnic Area. Located under the George Washington Bridge. Go south on Hudson Terrace from the G.W. Bridge and follow Henry Hudson Drive to the park entrance on your left. Make a right at your first circle, go down the hill and stick to your right. The ramp was rebuilt in 1999 and is a whole lot better than the old one. The ramp features a doublewide two boat-launching ramp with an 80-foot floating dock down the center. It’s a concrete ramp with parking for 50 cars with trailers. The lights from the bridge illuminate the entire ramp in the evenings. Hours of operation are from 8 am till dusk from the 1st week in April till the last weekend in October. There is no overnight parking and no services at this facility. Restrooms are available at the north section of the park. The ramp area is restricted to cars and trucks with trailers only. Summonses are issued for cars in the area without trailers. The ramp has a 24-ft. maximum length for boats. Boats must be registered and no inflatables may be launched. Boats landing after dark must use the Palisades Avenue exit.

This ramp is in the main current of the river and wakes, currents and wind must be dealt with. A new breakwater has been constructed on the south edge of the new ramp to help this situation. Larger boats must use the north side of the ramp as this break wall is too close to the floating dock. Winds and an incoming current make it risky navigation on the south side for larger boats.

Fees...Daily permits are $10.00. No residency restrictions. Seasonal passes will be issued once the construction is completed. No seasonal fee is set at this time. For further information call the Palisades Interstate Park at 201-768-1360.

10. Senasqua Park Launch Ramp Croton on the Hudson, N. Y.

East Shore

From Route 9 get off at the Senasqua Road exit and head south. Take a right across the railroad tracks and then a left to the park. Or...At the western end of Route 128, where it intersects with Route 9, take the black asphalt service road north alongside the railroad tracks and go through the tunnel. The ramp is found a few hundred yards at feet to the north. Watch out for the tunnel! It is only a single lane and has a height restriction of 6 feet 11 inches! If you’re taller than 6 feet 11 inches, take the first set of directions.

The ramp is a single wide concrete ramp with a sharp drop off at the water line. There is a floating dock system at this facility. The ramp becomes difficult at low tides, as does many ramps along the Hudson, particularly with larger boats. Over 22 feet may experience difficulty at low tide at this facility.

The ramp is concrete, double width, but only the left-hand side is useable. The right hand side is gravel and badly broken sections of concrete. The ramp is out of the main currents of the river and there are floating docks on the left side. Low tidal conditions are not a problem at this facility. UPDATE
Plenty of room for trailer parking.  They have a nice playground for kids and concession stands with vending machines.  While your there check out the beautiful 9-11 memorial they have there it s one of the best I’ve seen.  They also have sheriffs on duty there at all times. Always good I guess. They can answer any questions you may have.

Ramp off Gagan Rd in West Haverstraw NY
9W to Railroad Ave to Beach Road to Gagan Rd. At the end is a pretty new park and ramp.   This is in the Haverstraw Bay Park,.a Rockland County park. The launching fee is $10.00. This looks like a very nice ramp and it is well protected. Doesn't look like low tide will be a problem. It is a shallow area, but even at dead low, there is three or four feet of water. Head straight out to the main river about 150 yards and the water starts to drop off in to deeper water. This is a double ramp, and never seems very busy. There are fifty parking spaces for vehicles with trailers. looks like it is very easy to maneuver with your trailer.
UPDATES
Checked this park out last year. Spoke to the rangers and they said that the ramp is rarely used during the spring, fall, and weekdays. Weekends are nuts with wave runners and it is not worth going out. Very nice set up, with a ranger on premise most of the day.
If anyone has times for this ramp please let us know.

14. Georges Island Park Launch Ramp Montrose, N. Y.

Eastern Shore

Shore
Take Route 9 to Route 9A and follow the signs towards GeorgesIsland Park.  Park entrance is at the west end of Dutch Street about a mile off Route 9A.  Watch the STOP SIGNS!  The police in the area are ticket happy.  FULL STOPS!  Police in the park enforce all the rules!  Be out of
there at dusk!!
The ramp is capable of launching 4 boats at a time with two floating docks.  The center ramp is doublewide and will handle two boats comfortably.  The ramps are smooth concrete and asphalt with limited maneuvering room for cars with trailers.  Parking is available for 100 cars with trailers (That may be a stretch.  Reports we get say no way can they get that many parked in that area) and no overnight parking is permitted.
Hours of operation are from 8 am to dusk from April to October.  There are attendants to assist with launching your vessel.     That's nice!  The park has restrooms, picnic tables and grills with a playground and hiking trails.  Vessels up to 21 feet are permitted.
Fees...Westchester County Residents (with a county pass) $10.00 per use.  Non-residents $15.00 per use. Season passes are available for residents only for $70.00 with a $3.50 per launch use. There are senior citizen discounts that are just too complicated for non-holiday and weekdays.  You have to call on this one.  Car top launching has another set of rules we can't figure out either.

One of our members uses this ramp frequently and reports from April of 1999 that the police are very strict about the "Dusk Rule." If you are found in the park when the sun goes down, you may get ticketed or towed or both! The 8am till dusk, is enforced by the police and park employees.  Be
sure you are out of the park by dusk!

Jim Drechsel reports the launch is beautiful and has a long dock for tying up. If someone takes the Welcher Ave. exit, they can pick up bait at Buchanan Sports across from the diner. I think he nets also and has good information on what's going on the river. There are some good pictures on the counter all taken from Croton. I caught one decent size about 20 inches, catfish, eels etc. Only on the tide going out. The expense is high since it is $9.00 bridge fee, a whopping $22.00 launch fee and the RT 287 toll $6.00 fee. I got beat up pretty well. There is no fee during the week until Memorial Day.

For further information call the Georges Island Park at: 914-737-7530 between 8 am and 4 pm seven days a week.

15. Buchanan Municipal Launch Ramp Lents Cove, N. Y.

East Shore

From Route 9A go west on Bleakley Ave. At the fork in road go right on John Walsh Blvd. and follow the signs to Lents Cove. This ramp is a single launching concrete slab with a floating dock. Vessels over 24 feet may have problems launching at low tide.

Open from 6 am till 11 pm from April till October with parking for 75 cars with trailers. There is no overnight parking. Village residents with a $5.00 ID badge can launch for free. Without the badge it’s $5.00 per launch and (get this) $200 for non-residents! For non-residents there is no single day launch fee. Only seasonal. I can’t imagine too many non-residents lining up for those permits!

These people do not like outsiders using there ramp!

16. Peekskill Municipal Launch Ramp Peekskill, N. Y.

East Shore

From route 9 go west on Hudson St. to the end and go across the railroad tracks into Riverfront Green Park. (Just north of the railroad station) The ramp is at the southern end of the park. We are told to obey the posted speed limits at all times in this area.

The ramp is doublewide for launching two vessels at a time with a 50-foot floating dock down the center. The east ramp is asphalt and the west ramp is concrete. Each ramp has a different pitch to it so experiment with each to determine which is best for you at each tide.

There is plenty of room for maneuvering your car and trailer and enough parking for 50 cars with trailers. Overnight parking is permitted for permit holders and permission from the Peekskill Police must be obtained for each time used. Overnight parking is restricted to the far north end of the parking lot.

Stores and restaurants are within walking distance of the ramps and there are picnic tables and restrooms at this location. Hours of operation are from 8 am to 10 pm.

Fees...Season permits are $75.00 and daily permits are $20.00.

For further information call the Peekskill City Clerk at: 914-737-3400.

This from Joe in Cortland Manor - November 2004:
For the last 2 seasons I've been using (or trying to use) the Peekskill boat ramp. At high tide, the ramp area is hopelessly flooded. Since I use a car to haul my boat this is not good. Even pick up trucks have a difficult time launching boats. I've been to the Buccanan ramp and it seems to be a better bet at high tide.

17. Cornwall Landing Launch Ramp Cornwall, N. Y.

West Shore

From Route 9W go south on Route 218 to the fork in the road. Take the left fork (Hudson Street/Dock Hill Extension) . Go across the railroad tracks and follow the signs to the ramp.

The town of Cornwall does not like outsiders using their "public" ramp. Behave yourself in this area. The officials are known to instigate trouble for out of state plates. A quote from John Vargo tells us that on more than one occasion individuals from Cornwall have said to him, "We don’t want to see those kind of people in our park." What the hell does that tell you! I wonder what "kind" of people they were talking about? Fishermen? Who else would use the ramp? Just behave yourself in this town!

The ramp is single width of concrete with a 125-foot floating dock. There is plenty of room for maneuvering with parking for about 25 cars with trailers. No overnight parking is available.

Hours of operation are from dawn to dusk and there are picnic benches near the ramp.

Fees... Get this...You need a permit for your car and a permit for your trailer. That’s a new one! Only seasonal permits are issued. Non residents car $25.00 and $150.00 for your trailer. Residents pay $5.00 for the car and $50.00 for the trailer.

18. Newburgh Municipal Launch Ramp Newburgh, N. Y.

West Shore On the north side of Storm King Mountain.

The Newburgh Ramp is no longer free. Starting on April 1st there will be a booth there to collect $8. See this article http://www.recordonline.com/archive/2006/03/25/news-jdlaunch-03-25.html

From Route 9W go east on Broadway to the end. Make a right on Washington Place for one block and a left down the hill (Washington Street). Go across the railroad tracks to the parking area.

The ramp is big enough for two vessels to launch at the same time. The ramp has been renovated recently and is open. There is unlimited maneuvering room for launching and parking for about 25 cars with trailers. Overnight parking is permitted at your own risk.  Be careful to park cars and trailers in designated areas.  There are fines for improper parking and numerous summionses have been issued.
All users should know that Newburgh Police are ticketing trucks and trailers that are not parked on the pavement.
This differs from years past when parking was allowed on the hillsides.
THERE ARE NO SIGNS POSTING THIS FACT SO BE CAREFUL!!!

Hours of operation are from 7 AM to 9 PM.

Fees...Presently the fee is $8.00 at this facility.

This is a very popular ramp with many fishermen not venturing more than several hundreds yards from the ramp to fish. During the mid April run of stripers it’s not unusual to see fifty boats drifting in front of this ramp. Many of them hooked up with big stripers. You can’t get any closer to the fishing than this ramp!
Over the past few years, many restaurants have opened within walking distance

20. Beacon Municipal Launching Ramp Beacon, N. Y.

East Shore

FREE RAMP!

In Beacon from Route 9W follow the signs to the Beacon railroad station. The ramp is directly opposite the railroad platform.

This is a single ramp of concrete with several sections. The top section has exposed rebar, which you should avoid. Boaters should be careful at low tide on this ramp. The end of the ramp has an 8" drop off, and at low water, recovering your boat can be difficult. Float-on trailers are not recommended at low tide. The ramp has a 58-foot floating dock that is in very poor condition.

The channel to the main river is to the south of the ramp. The channel is marked but not very clearly and there are submerged rocks on either side. Try your best to stay in the channel. Low tide and low light conditions are hazardous. Use caution!

For further information call the Poughkeepsie Department of Recreation at: 914-451-4100.

UPDATE! At the present time there are many "potholes" beneath the water on the launch ramp.  While this is not a big problem launching a boat, it can be a big problem retrieving a boat.  Try getting a boat onto a trailer which is cocked to one side because one wheel is in a huge hole.  I did put a call into the Poughkeepsie Parks department, and apparently they are aware of the problem, but they were unable to tell me what they were going to do to remedy the problem and when they were going to do it.   Boaters should beware that the problem with the underwater potholes causes long waits to retrieve, particularly in the evening, as frustrated boaters struggle to get their boats on their trailers. Also boaters beware, there are no bumpers on the public dock near the ramp.  (Thanks to Dan from Poughkeepsie for the follow up.)

Not as much parking as noted above - there are 4 truck/trailer pull-ups and the rest of the parking is for regular cars. Launch ramp is still a mess and very difficult for larger boats, or for a single boater to navigate since there is no immediate dock to tie up to. But it is still FREE!! - Meredith Nohai

Schodack Island Boat Ramp and park

Finally a modern launch for all size boats on the upper Hudson!!! Easy to get to for us fisherman from Massachusetts, as it's on our side of the river.

The park opened in April of 2003. Boat ramp is a concrete 2boat launch with new aluminum docks on both sides. Sheltered from the main river. Fresh water hose for rinsing the boats after use on the river. Plenty of parking. Also has a brand new restroom building, with a history of Schodack Island, type of fish to be found and map of the river on a billboard outside the restrooms.

The park offers a walking trail, hunting options, shore benches, shore access for fishing and are trying this year to provide permits for day picnics. It has no trash receptacles. Take out what you take in. No alchohol permitted.(use your imagination:)

It is located beneath the Castleton Bridge, just south of the town of Castleton on the Hudson, on Rt 9J. The gate opens during mid April and costs $6.00 per vehicle, boat in tow or not, per day. Typically during early Striper season, they open the gates from 7am-7pm. However, last year they changed the times as the season went on and were open as early as 6am and as late as 9pm. No overnite parking though, as the gate is locked each evening.

I had nothing but good experiences there. The park attendants keep an eye on the vehicles and trailers, and the DNR folks are there often using the ramp to patrol the river, so make sure your boat and trailer registration are current!!

The ramp was basically deserted after the Striper run, and I found it enjoyable to use during the summer time fishing for largemouth, smallmouth and catfish.

Directions from Pittsfield, Ma via Rt. 20:  Take Rt 20W to the light after the Hess station (before the merge with I90 into Albany) Turn left here and follow that road to the first stop sign. Turn left here (remember this little turn on the way back, as I missed it a couple times) and follow to the end. Turn left again and you're on 9J in the town of Castleton on the Hudson. Go down 9J thru the main street, and when you run out of houses start looking for the park entrance on your right. It comes up quick and is on the first big curve. Less than a mile from turning onto 9J. You will essentially be turning into the park right under the Castleton Bridge. It's a half mile to the gatehouse on a whitish dirt road.

     Good luck

*****************************************************

As might be expected, when calling the individual ramp facilities, we found the privately owned marinas to be much more informed about their operations than the municipal ramps. Some of the municipal city clerks were in fact quite comical in their answers. It would appear the boat launching facility in their respective municipalities are neither the only thing nor the most important item on their agendas. On the other hand, the privately owned or commercial marinas listed were very well informed about their particular operations.

When in doubt, always call, and call again if necessary. When calling, always get the person’s name you have spoken with.

Much of the info coming from this list of ramps came from the following sources:

Maptech Waterproof Charts

Maptech, Inc.
10 Industrial Way
Amesbury
, MA  01913

Toll free: 888-839-5551

Web Site www.maptech.com

These people put out a great chart of the Hudson with listings on parks, ramps, depths, Fuel Marine supplies and everything else a Boater might need along the Hudson River. The charts are waterproof and are available in both a folded and rolled version.

Many ramps experience problems at low tide, particularly during a full or new moon tide. Low water can be particularly bothersome for "Float-on" trailers. Roller styles fair much better of recovering your boat during these low water conditions.

See you on the water,

Hackensack River
I know of two free boat ramps....one good and one not so good. Both are on the Hackensack River. The first is more like a canoe ramp. It is in Secaucus at the old Mill. (Up by the high school) It gets you into the creek (not sure of creek name) and you can go out to the river. (about 50 yards from ramp) The only problem is the creek goes almost dry at low tide. It is more for canoes and row boats. The second ramp is much better. It is in Laurrel Hill Park. (County park?) This is also in Secaucus. I think the area is known by the oldtimers as Snake Hill. The ramp is free. Parking (with trailers) is free. It has a floating dock on each side and can handle large boats but we have a report that a limit of 24 feet  in length has been set. For those of you that arent familiar with the Hackensack, it leads you to the Kills which can get you into NY harbor. It is famous (locally) for it's Stripers. I have fished this area for years. It is relatively good fishing from spring to late fall.
