Vintage Victorian ValentinesOpen Now through March 5, 2023

Utica, N.Y. - Paper, lace, gilt, and watercolor. Don’t miss these Victorian era and vintage valentines from the History Center collections. A large selection, including some from the Proctor family, will be on display throughout the month of February in this pop-up exhibit. What’s not to love about these seasonal favorites? The collection spans the 1880s through the 1930s and contains a sampling of the “Golden Age” of valentines.

Staatsburg, N.Y. (2/7/2023) — Despite them being all around us, what do we really know about the trees in our local environment? Kids can join Staatsburgh State Historic Site staff for a free, 45-minute guided landscape walk exploring some of the different types of trees found on the grounds of Staatsburgh, along the Hudson River. Staff will guide children ages 7-12 in exploring some of the benefits of various trees, from feeding local animals to beautifying our environment.

(February 8, 2023) – MidAmerica Productions today announced programming for its 2023 season at Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall, marking the 40th anniversary for the company and one of the longest tenures (over 1,000 concerts as a presenter) at Carnegie Hall.

Programming highlights include the US premiere of TARANTO: A Cathedral Triptych by John Rutter on May 29th. The work tells the story of Saint Cataldo, a 7th-century Irish monk who was shipwrecked off the coast of Southern Italy returning from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He was rescued and brought to shore and liked Taranto so much that he never returned to Ireland. After his death, the people of Taranto, Puglia built the cathedral in his honor and he was declared a saint.

(2/6/23) — At the turn of the 20th Century, it took a small army of employees to operate Staatsburgh, the Gilded Age home of Ruth Livingston and Ogden Mills. This winter, Staatsburgh State Historic Site will offer a special 90-minute tour that focuses on the lives and duties of those servants who worked in the mansion – the English butler, the French chefs, and countless maids. The tour, called “A Life in Service,” will show visitors the mansion through the servants' eyes, as they rose before dawn and toiled until after midnight to provide the luxurious lifestyle enjoyed by their employers.

Designed to cultivate healthy appetites and palates with meal planning strategies, recipes, and activities for the whole family, the event includes a 90-minute whole foods family meal-planning workshop for adults at the SPAC School of the Arts, and “Food as Art” activities for children at the neighboring Children’s Museum at Saratoga, culminating in a festive all-inclusive family-style dinner at The Pines at SPAC.
