Astoria, Queens, New York, February 16, 2017 - Museum of the Moving Image and Cinema Tropical, the acclaimed New York-based organization dedicated to promoting Latin American cinema in the United States, co-present the 2017 edition of the Cinema Tropical Festival, from February 24 through 26. This year's festival showcases six feature films-from Brazil, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and the United States-including winners and nominees from the 7th Annual Cinema Tropical Awards, which were announced in January.

The Met Makes Its Images of Public-Domain Artworks Freely Available through New Open Access Policy

New York, N.Y. (February 7, 2017) - Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, announced today its adoption of a new policy: all images of public-domain artworks in the Museum's collection are now available for free and unrestricted use. This updated policy, known as Open Access, utilizes the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) designation. This policy change is an update to The Museum's 2014 Open Access for Scholarly Content (OASC) initiative. The Met's Open Access policy facilitates the use of more than 375,000 images of public-domain artworks for both scholarly and commercial purposes. The Museum is collaborating with global partners to enable greater access to the collection.

Astoria, New York, January 30, 2017-Actor, musician, activist, and humanitarian Harry Belafonte will turn 90-years-old on March 1, 2017. On this occasion, Museum of the Moving Image will celebrate his legendary career as an artist and activist-a little early-on Saturday, February 4, with a three-film retrospective and conversation with Belafonte's friend, the best-selling author Walter Mosley. The Harry Belafonte Pre-Birthday Celebration will feature screenings of The Strolling ‘20s, a television special produced by and starring Belafonte and featuring Sidney Poitier, Diahann Carroll, Sammy Davis, Jr. and more, that has hardly been seen in 50 years; Robert Altman's Kansas City, which features Belafonte's favorite of his own performances; and Otto Preminger's classic Carmen Jones, in which he stars opposite Dorothy Dandridge.

New York, N.Y. - Taking as its focus one of The Met's most captivating masterpieces, this thematic exhibition affords a unique context for appreciating the heritage and allure of Circus Sideshow (Parade de cirque), painted in 1887-88, by Georges Seurat (1859-91). Anchored by a remarkable group of related works by Seurat that fully illuminates the lineage of the motif in his inimitable conté crayon drawings, the presentation explores the fascination the sideshow subject held for other artists in the 19th century, ranging from the great caricaturist Honoré Daumier at mid-century to the young Pablo Picasso a t the fin de siècle.

Astoria, New York, January 20, 2017-Museum of the Moving Image and its online publication Sloan Science & Film are pleased to join the nationwide film program Science on Screen®, an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, in presenting a series of screenings accompanied by discussions with scientists and filmmakers. The inaugural series at Moving Image, from January 29 through May 21, includes films that span from the silent era through those made for the Internet, and focus on subjects ranging from seahorses to androids. Science on Screen is organized by Sonia Epstein, Executive Editor of Sloan Science & Film.

Arctic Golf Going from Adirondacks to New York City

Saranac Lake, N.Y.  - Arctic Golf, one of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival's most unique and popular events, will be going from a home grown, small town event to the big city as part of Central Park's Winter Jam event on January 28.  Not many people can say they've played miniature golf outdoors in the winter, except those who have at the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. But now thousands of New York City's residents and visitors from all over the world will get to experience this winter oddity during Winter Jam.
