USS SLATER 1945Albany, N.Y. – The third Saturday in June is recognized and celebrated nationwide as Destroyer Escort Day.  On Saturday, June 16th, we will pay homage to the Destroyer Escort sailors killed in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War years and to the fifteen Destroyer Escorts lost in action. There will be a ceremony to honor and remember Destroyer Escorts and their sailors at 9:00 a.m. at USS SLATER.

National Racing Museum and Hall of FameSaratoga Springs, N.Y. — Legendary thoroughbred racing personality Tom Durkin, who called 25 editions of the Belmont Stakes from 1990 through 2014 for the New York Racing Association, will discuss several of his favorite calls of the iconic race during a special program at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m. The program is open to the public and free to attend.

Rensselaer, N.Y. –On May 26, 2018, Crailo State Historic Site will host a Pinkster celebration featuring musical performances and educational experiences. Once a Dutch holiday commemorating Pentecost, Pinkster became a distinctly African American holiday in the Hudson River Valley during the colonial era.  During the 17th and 18th centuries, enslaved and free African Americans transformed Pinkster from a Dutch religious observance into a spring festival and a celebration of African cultural traditions.

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – As part of Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s mission to increase collaboration among the local business community and position Saratoga Springs as a worldwide cultural destination, SPAC in partnership with the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce introduced Freihofer’s Jazz Fest Friday 2018.  Presented at a press conference at Caffe Lena on May 22, the new community event is slated for June 22 as the kick-off to Freihofer’s Saratoga Jazz Festival weekend.

Mabee Farm Dangerous Frontier Living History WeekendJune 2-3 at Mabee Farm 

Rotterdam Junction, N.Y. – On Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. travel back to the tumultuous year of 1759 as the Mabee Farm Historic Site is transformed into an outpost on the Mohawk frontier during the French and Indian War. Danger lurks at every corner as skilled artisans practice their crafts, boats drift up and down the Mohawk, and militiamen prepare for a climactic battle.

USS SlaterAlbany, N.Y. – The Destroyer Escort Historical Museum has received a $200,000 grant from the Department of Interior, National Park Service (NPS) through the National Maritime Heritage (NMH) grant program, for the repair of USS SLATER’s mast and hull. Thirty-four of these grants totaling $2.6 million were awarded in collaboration with the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs). With these funds, organizations and agencies conduct education and preservation projects designed to preserve historic maritime resources and to increase public awareness and appreciation for the maritime heritage of the United States.

Albany, NY – This May, Discover Albany’s partner Taste of Troy Food Tours is increasing downtown Albany’s tourism programs for visitors with the launch of the Historic Downtown Albany Food Tour.

Amy Koren-Roth founded Taste of Troy Food Tours in Troy in 2016 and decided to expand the company to Albany in 2017. Discover Albany has worked with Amy Koren-Roth to develop this new, weekly Albany-focused tour to increase tourism offerings for visitors. Aligning with Discover Albany’s “Tastes and Traditions” initiative, the new guided walking tour combines Albany’s rich history with the city’s recent exciting culinary accomplishments.

On display through September 23, 2018, this companion exhibition to the State Museum’s current Enterprising Waters: New York’s Erie Canal looks at the art inspired by the canal and the opportunities it afforded artists, both trained and untrained, working in a variety of media, such as paintings, photographs, sketchbooks, ceramics, and beadwork.
