NYS Parks, Recreation, Historic Preservation Rensselaer, N.Y. – On August 12 from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm, discover how colonists in the Hudson River Valley prepared ice cream on hot summer days, long before electricity made it easy to keep things cold.  Watch as interpreters in period costume use colonial era recipes, ice cream molds, and a reproduction 18th century ice cream maker called a sabotiere to prepare this summer treat the old fashioned way.  A scavenger hunt will highlight items in the museum related to Dutch colonial dairy production, the sugar trade, and more.  Visitors of all ages will also learn how to make their own ice cream at home, using basic ingredients and simple techniques.

Shaker Heritage SocietyAlbany, N.Y. – Classes in chair taping, basket weaving, and woven holiday ornaments will be taught on Saturdays at the Shaker Heritage Society.

On Saturday, August 19, (10:00-1:00), local artist, Elizabeth Lee, will lead a workshop in constructing Shaker chair seats using cotton tape. Participants will need to bring their own chair with all old chair tape/seat removed as well as fresh chair tape. (To determine how much chair tape needed, please visit www.shakerworkshops.com.) $25 per participant. Pre-registration with payment is required by August 15th. Space is limited.

(July 19, 2017) — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College has received two major grants totaling $160,000 from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Terra Foundation for American Art in support of the fall 2018 exhibition and catalogue The Imagist Object: New Dimensions in Chicago Art, 1964-1980.

Saratoga Auto AuctionSaratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Saratoga Auto Auction, presented by the Saratoga Auto Museum, announces a world-class classic car auction taking place on September 22 and 23rd, 2017.  Up for bid will be 200 unique and vintage autos, classic boats and motorcycles, all scheduled to be auctioned from the stage at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) as well as online via Proxibid and by phone. Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – A celebration of Argentinian culture and traditions will surround the July 20 SPAC debut of percussive dance troupe Che Malambo with special pre-show features that include a pre-performance display of Argentine horses and polo players on the lawn, an Argentine asado and authentic cuisine at the Hall of Springs restaurant. The Film Forum @ SPAC will also present the acclaimed film Un Tango Mas along with tango lessons at the Spa Little Theater on July 22. Tickets and more information are available at spac.org.

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The 2nd annual Chip Festival will take place on Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs City Center, located in Saratoga Springs, NY. The event’s Presenting Sponsor for the 2017 festival is Wise Snack Foods. The festival, hosted by The Saratoga Springs Lions Club, will feature sampling and purchasing booths with chips of all kinds, plus salsas, pretzels, popcorn and other snacks. Additionally, the festival will hold its 2nd annual competition in a variety of categories for chips as well as dips and salsas. The Big Idaho® Potato Truck will also be appearing at the festival as part of its national tour. The price for general admission is $5, and children 12 and under are free.

The tours provide visitors unique perspectives on the Tang Teaching Museum. Curator-led tours delve into specific exhibitions. A collections tour offers a unique opportunity into the spaces where much of the Tang's 9,000 works of art and cultural objects are stored when not part of an exhibition. And behind-the-scenes tours give insights on the kinds of work that goes on that makes the Tang a teaching museum.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the completion of the new visitor center at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center in Delmar, Albany County and launched the new Adventure NY initiative, designed to connect New Yorkers with the state’s outdoor destinations. The new $8.9 million visitor center, funded by NY Works and the State’s Environmental Protection Fund, invites visitors to explore Five Rivers’ local fields, ponds, forests, birds, and history through interactive displays and exhibits.
