Erie Canalway itinerariesWaterford, N.Y. - As the NYS Canal System gets set to open on May 19, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor has released nine new itineraries to lead people to great places and experiences along the Erie and Champlain Canals. The itineraries showcase some of the best historic sites, national and state parks, museums, and recreational experiences and are suited for weekend and day trips. Suggestions for cycling, hiking, paddling, and canal tours, as well as nearby places to eat or picnic are also included.

Waterford, N.Y. - As New York State prepares to honor the bicentennial of construction of the Erie Canal in 2017, there is new cause for celebration. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and National Park Service Acting Director Michael T. Reynolds today announced that the NYS Canal System has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

The designation places New York's operating canals among the premier historic sites in the United States.

ERIE CANAL IN FAIRPORT BY KATHY EICHORN, 2013 CONTEST WINNER Waterford, N.Y. - Entries are being accepted through August 30, 2014 for the 9th annual Erie Canalway Photo Contest. Winning photos will be featured in the 2015 Erie Canalway calendar.

Amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit prints and digital images in four contest categories: Bridges, Buildings and Locks; Fun and Festivities; On the Water; and the Nature of the Canal.

The contest captures and shares the beauty, history, people, and distinctive character of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, which is comprised of the Erie, Oswego, Cayuga/Seneca, and Champlain Canals, and their historic alignments, and surrounding communities.

Mothers to ride free on Mother's Day

Niagara Falls, N.Y. - Celebrities, world leaders and tourists from Canada and around the world will once again have a chance to ride the iconic Maid of the Mist when the boats are launched in Niagara Falls, N.Y., beginning Saturday, May 10, at 10 a.m. The Maid's 2014 season marks the 129th consecutive year for one of North America's longest running tourist attractions, and one that has long been considered a "must do" for Niagara Falls visitors from around the world.

Festivals and recreational events kick off the 190th opening of the Erie Canal

 

Waterford, N.Y. - The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the New York State Canal Corporation have teamed up to sponsor 28 events in 2014 to showcase the Canalway Corridor's nationally significant heritage and the tremendous recreational appeal of the waterway and trails today. By working together, the federal and state partners are able to provide financial assistance to more communities and expand the number of sponsored events from 20 in 2013 to 28 this year.
