Afterglow Considers How Landscapes Provide Reflection and Healing

Hudson, NY – The Olana Partnership announced today that this season’s special exhibition Afterglow: Frederic Church and the Landscape of Memory will open May 12 in the Sharp Family Gallery at Olana State Historic Site. Afterglow brings together for the first time a series of intimate memorial landscapes painted by Church, 19th-century America’s foremost landscape painter, and highly personal family artifacts – never before exhibited -- from Olana’s collections.

Drew will discuss Algonkian customs of war, adoption and captivity, alliances, and friendships and marriages between Natives, Europeans, and Africans.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that New York State agencies and partners will celebrate a series of stewardship days to help enhance parks, historic sites and public lands. Service projects during four events held throughout the year will raise awareness and visibility of the state’s many outdoor recreation assets and their needs during the Love Our New York Lands Stewardship Days.

Yet, when his great-granddaughter, Ruth Livingston Mills, lived at Staatsburgh at the turn of the 20th century, the staff was exclusively White and of European descent. Staatsburgh State Historic Site is offering a free, one-hour program, “Slavery, Segregation & Staatsburgh” in-person on Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. and via Zoom on Thursday, April 18 at 7 p.m. The program is free, but reservations are required

Initiative Part of the Governor’s Commitment to Provide Resources and Support to Veterans and Their Families

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that beginning on Monday, April 1, 2024, New York State veterans and Gold Star Families will have free access to New York State parks, campgrounds, day use areas, historic sites, and recreation areas through the expansion of the Lifetime Liberty Pass Program. Governor Hochul signed a package of legislation in November 2023 to support veterans and their families, which included this initiative.

Friends of Knox Farm State ParkEast Aurora, NY—As the world observes the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, a pivotal moment in Indigenous history will be celebrated and honored at the Friends of Knox Farm State Park EAclipse Celebration.

Approximately 800 years ago, during a total solar eclipse, the Great Law of Peace was formed, creating the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Ticket holders at the EAclipse event will be able to enjoy a unique blend of live performances, teachings, and powerful Indigenous-produced sound scores centered around the theme of connectivity to the natural world and the creation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.

Governor Kathy Hochul today launched an interactive, online timeline titled ‘Blazing a Trail: A History of New York State Parks and Historic Sites’ in celebration of New York State Parks’ Centennial. Organized by eight chronological eras, the first two installments of the timeline are available here, with subsequent eras launching throughout 2024.
