Staatsburg, N.Y. (2/10/24) — Stephen. Belinda. Mary. William. Dinah. Those are the known names of the nine people New York State governor Morgan Lewis enslaved at his country estate, Staatsburgh. What do we know of their lives in the Hudson Valley and the legacy of slavery within New York today?

Staatsburgh State Historic Site is offering their free, one-hour program “Slavery, Segregation & Staatsburgh” on Saturdays, March 2 and 16 at 2:00 p.m. Staatsburgh’s founder, Morgan Lewis, enslaved people of African descent at Staatsburgh. Yet, when his great-granddaughter, Ruth Livingston Mills, lived at Staatsburgh at the turn of the 20th century, the staff was exclusively White and of European descent. At the same time, a free Black community was able to grow and thrive in the surrounding hamlet.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced state parks, historic sites, campgrounds and trails operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation saw a record 84.1 million visits in 2023. Total visits statewide surged by nearly 4.7 million, a 6 percent increase, compared to the previous record year in 2022 – underscoring Governor Hochul's commitment to expanding access to parks and outdoor recreation as the park system marks its 100th anniversary in 2024.

There is a winter scavenger hunt of the mansion that visitors ages 7-12, can enjoy while on tour, which includes a prize.

Olana State Historic Site (Peter Aaron)Hudson, NY - The Olana Partnership will hold its first Olana Third Thursdays on January 18 from 11:00am to 5:00pm at Olana State Historic Site. Olana Third Thursdays are monthly days of free tours of the historic landscape and house and programs for all ages.

On January 18, a special drop-in Artmaking in the Afternoon will take place in the Wagon House Education Center for all ages and skill levels, professional art supplies and refreshments are included.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced a year-long celebratory challenge that all New York State residents and visitors can participate in to explore our state parks, learn about New York history, and give back to New York State Parks for the next generation of adventurers. Set to begin on January 1, 2024, the New York State Parks Centennial Challenge includes 100 missions that can be completed at various state parks and historic sites. Participants will need to complete 24 missions throughout 2024 to complete the challenge.
