Cat's Meow Auction and Gala is Fundraiser for Local Causes CATSKILL, New York – The 61 fabulous feline statues that have been lining Main Street here this summer as part of the widely publicized "Cat 'N Around Catskill" celebration will be auctioned off on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at the Cat's Meow Auction and Gala.              The fundraiser will be held at the Historic Catskill Point, which is located at the end of Main Street on the majestic Hudson River.  The indoor event begins at 1:00 p.m. and will be held rain or shine.

Tickets to the Cat's Meow Auction and Gala are $30 and include a sumptuous brunch buffet catered by Great Food & Co., of Red Hook, New York, as well as a wine tasting.  Proceeds from the event will benefit Animalkind, a cat rescue organization, the Heart of Catskill Association (HOCA)/Chamber of Commerce for future Catskill promotional projects and other not-for-profit organizations yet to be named.

The benefit will also help fund the Barry Hopkins Memorial Scholarship Art Scholarship.   This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Catskill High School who will be continuing his or her education in the arts.  Barry, who passed away last summer after a long battle with brain cancer, was a devoted art teacher at the Middle School, as well as an artist and naturalist who helped create “A Greater Sense of Place.”

"The Cat's Meow Gala and Auction is an opportunity to be a part of Catskill history, to partake in the festivities and to see who takes home our famous cats," said Linda Overbaugh, Executive Director of HOCA, the organizer of the summer-long celebration.  "It’s a purr-fect ending to a purr-fect summer!"

With whimsical names like Catson Pollock, Americat, Cat’n Hook and Pussy Willow, the brightly colored fiberglass cat statues were hand-decorated by local artists.  True to their real-life counterparts, no two cats are alike and each has its own distinct personality.

"Visitors have flocked to Catskill again this summer to see the cats and have their photos taken with their favorite feline," said Daniela Marino, Director of the Greene Country Tourism Promotion Department, which helped promote the public art exhibit.  "The cats helped give Greene County great exposure as an interesting destination with lots to see and do."
