albany.jpgALBANY, N.Y. -- Memorial Day weekend is the traditional kick off of summer for many, but for Albany this holiday will be celebrated by hosting several important events that will bring competitors from around the state and the nation.                  Eighteen Albany hotels, local school facilities and the Empire State Plaza will host close to 4,000 debaters of The National Catholic Forensic League.  High School students from throughout the nation will travel to Albany with final competition taking place on Sunday at the Empire State Plaza.                 The annual Gymrat Basketball Challenge will utilize several local college gyms and facilities as 400 players compete throughout the weekend.                 The Guilderland Soccer Club is host to 2,000 soccer players at Guilderland High School and also is planning to utilize eight local hotel properties.                 The Crossfit Northeast Qualifier, being held at the Albany Court Club, will bring two hundred competitors to town who will stay at a number of Wolf Road properties.                 All totaled these events will fill more than 5,700 hotel room nights and 6,600 participants to Albany.  "This diversity is real destination strength" noted Kathy Lanni, Chairperson of the Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau.  "We are proud to host such a wide variety of events as we continue to promote the importance of travel and tourism to the Capital Region."
