Something Special at EVERY (Page) TurnWatkins Glen, N.Y. - After a year of designing, building and editing, it's here. The official Watkins Glen and Schuyler County Travel Guide, produced annually by the Chamber has arrived for the summer season. Featuring an all-new format, this year's layout is in the form of a chapter book. The unique part? The chapters correspond with the Chamber's new logo. Themes based on Arts, History and Culture; Outdoor Recreation and Attractions; Hospitality, Wine and Culinary Excellence; and Water and Lake Activities represent the four main sections of the new guide. Also new this year is the "scrapbook-like" approach. Less "sales-pitchy", the guide features several photos, less text, and real-life information, testimonials and tips from other travelers' vacations. Additionally, the guide has all new illustrated maps inside. Pull-out maps that is. State, regional, county and village locations are prominently displayed in an eight-page fold out map that easily can be taken out of the center of the guide for on-site navigating. The new map breaks away from the previous style of over-detailed, architectural maps used, in that it was custom-created by a local illustrator to feature colorful key attractions to the area, making for more enticing vacation-planning. As the guide improves with each year, it is designed as a lure-piece that is sent not only all over the state, and country, but all over the world. It accounts for much of the 20,000+ visitors that come through the Chamber's Visitor Center doors each season, as it is sent out in the mail, downloaded from the web and picked up in the center. Additionally, the guide is now available for view or download in an interactive format on the Chamber's new website, watkinsglenchamber.com. In 2008 2,058 travel guides were sent out to visitors, yet in 2009 4,168 were sent. Prepared for the increase in numbers, in 2009, 125,000 travel guides were printed. In 2010 150,000 guides were planned to be printed due to rising demand, however budget cuts brought the quantity back to 130,000, yet still an increase though over previous years. As a tool for travel planning as well as a local informative resource, community and business members are encouraged to order a supply of the new guides. Now available for pick up at the Chamber office, guides can be reserved and ordered by contacting Katie Strawser, Visitor Center Coordinator at 607-535-4300 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The process for the 2011 Travel Guide has already begun, and businesses will soon have the opportunity to take part in advertising for that guide as well. Please contact Miranda Polmanteer, Director of Tourism and Marketing for more info at 535-4300.
