Niagara Falls, N.Y.
- After a successful inaugural season, the Encounter Niagara team of Historic Figures has returned to the Niagara Falls State Parks for 2011 with an expanded program and more characters that bring to life the story of Niagara Falls and showcase the American side of the falls.
Annie Edson Taylor (the first person to go over the Falls in a Barrel) returns to delight and educate visitors on the perils of her journey over the Falls. Nikola Tesla, famed Engineer and Inventor (known as the "man who invented the twentieth century") returns as well as Judge and Businessman Augustus Porter, joined by Tightrope Walker "The Great Blondin", War of 1812 hero Parkhurst Whitney and his three daughters (for whom the Three Sisters Islands were named) are among the notable figures who engage visitors, share the history and pose for photos.
Last year's inaugural program was judged to be a roaring success, and - as team members mused - "we travelled the world without having to leave the beauty of our State Park!". The group are photographed by visitors from all around the world and all across the US and Canada. "When we greet guests" quips Augustus Porter, "we introduce ourselves as the history of Niagara".
Encounter Niagara is a company dedicated to showcasing the beauty and splendour of the American side of the Falls and the Experience in Niagara and Buffalo for visitors from around the world.
The Characters appear on Saturdays from 12 noon until 5pm until July 1, then Saturdays (12-5) and Tuesdays (11-4) as well as special events and occasions. The troupe is always available to greet groups and this can be pre-arranged by calling 716-359-6170. All members of the team are qualified "Step-On Guides" for Niagara Experiences.
