JANUARY Free on Sundays now through April 28, 2013 Tuesday, January 15, 2013 Nature: From Howling Wilderness to Vacation Destination Charles Mitchell, PhD Elmira College Drawing on landscape painting, photography, travelers' accounts, and other sources, Dr. Mitchell will explore the evolution of American attitudes towards nature. Beginning with perceptions of the American landscape as a howling wilderness, a wasteland to be tamed and transformed, he will trace the social, cultural and economic forces that led to the perception of wild nature as something of value to be experienced and preserved. The family group "Rebecca Colleen and The Chore Lads" perform a variety of acoustic folk, country, gospel and blue grass.  Hailing from the family-run farm in Romulus, New York, the group includes Peter McDonald, Rebecca Colleen McDonald, and Patrick McDonald--father, daughter and son. Together they lend their voices to three-part harmonies and the incendiary playing of their instruments, to break-your-heart ballads. These creatures can be realistic or fantasy animals.  Linda encourages creativity within the class allowing ideas to evolve while working.  A dog's body could have lion's paws, squirrel's tail, and a bird's head.  Or, the animal could be you as a self portrait.  After they are fired once, the animals will be glazed during the second session, and then fired again for later pick up. It has helped to create the cultural and political character of the Americas as we know it. This cultural heritage has attracted artists from all over the world, most notably Mexican and American, to create works based on this magical and intriguing history. To start, a simple bowl will be made using a support form.  Then, coils of clay will be added for additional height and shape.  The pots will be fired once before the second session.  During the second session the pots will be glazed with designs in black and white, and then fired again for later pick up.
