According to a recent study commissioned by the New York State Department of Economic Development, over 81,000 people were employed in tourism jobs in the 10-county Hudson Valley region at the beginning of 2013, and spending by tourists totaled over $4.75 billion the previous year. Mary Kay Vrba, president of Hudson Valley Tourism, Inc., commented, "The growth of tourism is very beneficial to our local economies, with the Hudson Valley realizing over $318 million in local taxes benefiting small towns as well as larger cities. Our organization has been promoting tourism for over 25 years, helping the region increase jobs and revenue." National Geographic Traveler has named the Hudson Valley as one of the must-see twenty places in the world to visit this year. Tourism officials have capitalized on the designation in advertising, press releases, articles, and web promotions. Record numbers of tourists are expected to visit the Hudson Valley throughout 2013.
