Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The 2nd annual Chip Festival will take place on Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs City Center, located in Saratoga Springs, NY. The event’s Presenting Sponsor for the 2017 festival is Wise Snack Foods. The festival, hosted by The Saratoga Springs Lions Club, will feature sampling and purchasing booths with chips of all kinds, plus salsas, pretzels, popcorn and other snacks. Additionally, the festival will hold its 2nd annual competition in a variety of categories for chips as well as dips and salsas. Family-friendly entertainment and activities are also planned for the event, including a selfie-station, a juggler and a balloon artist.
Wise Snack Foods is the 2017 Chip Festival’s Presenting Sponsor. Jeremy Bjork, Chief Marketing Officer of Wise Snack Foods, stated, “Wise Foods is excited to once again be the title sponsor of The Chip Festival. This is a fun way to celebrate the birthplace of the potato chip and a great way to enjoy how much chips have evolved since George Crum’s first potato chips. We will be showcasing unique, hard-to-find and limited edition flavor varieties alongside some of our tried-and-true snacks, so we know chip fans in attendance will be delighted by the array of offerings!”
The Chip Festival will also feature a contest element for the second year in a row, naming winners in twelve categories, as well as an overall winner. The Chief Judge for the second year in a row is Brendan Walsh, Dean of the School of Culinary Arts at the Culinary Institute of America. Judges include World Sandwich Champion and Founder of Sandwich America Jennifer Daskevich, alongside local chefs, celebrities, restaurateurs and culinary talent.
Additional major sponsors of The Chip Festival include Gold Sponsors Utz, The Adirondack Trust Company, and Digital First Media. Silver Sponsors are Herr’s, Saratoga.com, and SNAC International. Bronze Sponsors include Ballreich’s and the Saratoga Convention and Tourism Bureau. A full list of sponsors and companies planning to participate is available at www.thechipfestival.com.
The Chip Festival was started in Saratoga Springs because local legend has it that the potato chip was actually invented in The Spa City in the 1850s. A dissatisfied customer at Moon's Lake House restaurant complained that his order of potatoes were too thick, soft, and tasteless. After a few attempts to please the diner, cook George Speck Crum, in a fit of pique, reputedly sent out a plate of thinly sliced, crispy fried, heavily salted potatoes, thinking they would be inedible – and just the opposite happened. Thus, the potato chip was born.
Run by The Saratoga Springs Lions Club, the Chip Festival will help the organization help others in the community through special projects and initiatives. Saratoga Springs Lions Club “King Lion” Rick Reeves says, “We are very excited to be putting on this event for the 2nd year in a row, and thank all of the sponsors and companies who will be a part of it.”
