Catskills Region, N.Y. (Aug. 11) - The Catskills mountain bike trails traverse epic vertical feet and
wind around the region's mountains and valleys. And the number of recreation areas is growing with the recently opened Windham Mountain Bike Park, home of the only World Cup circuit race in the United States.
This past weekend, American Aaron Gwin won the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Windham, hurtling down the mountain to thunderous applause with a time of 2:38 to win the Men's Elite DHI.
If you're feeling jazzed on the spirit of competition and an
American win at Windham, head to the Catskills to check out some of our off-the-beaten-path mountain bike trails, including:
Windham Mountain Bike Center - Newly opened just this summer, this lift-serviced park offers trails for a variety of
skills and features flow style trails, new intermediate level terrain to complement the World Cup trails, as well as a pump track. Rentals, lessons, guided tours and a cool base lodge with food and drinks available as well. To build the park, Windham partnered with Gravity Logic, the same folks who
developed the Bike Park at Whistler in Canada.
Check out the Windham Enduro Series held every
Tuesday from now until September 22. Open to all abilities, this is a casual ride featuring three sections of timed racing just to add an element of competition. Join up for a burger and beer afterward. Register at www.bikereg.com.
Elm Ridge Bike Path - Also in Windham, just two miles from the bike park, the Elm Ridge Wild Forest offers more than 20 miles of challenging terrain, as well as some beginner-friendly, non-technical trails and some of the best single track in the Catskills.
The Windham Path - This scenic little 1.5-mile loop is
a great way to warm up, offering picturesque views of streams, beaver dams and the surrounding Catskill Mountains. Trailhead located on South Street in Windham.
In the town of Round Top, Roundtopia is a local secret,
offering over 20 miles of single track and fire roads maintained by the Round Top Mountain Bike Association (RTMBA).
