Douglaston, N.Y. - The Alley Pond Environmental Center in Queens has announced an exciting roster of upcoming events for kids and adults, including programs on astronomy, art and cooking, along with nature walks and arts & crafts!

All activities are taking place at the Center, which is located at 228-06 Northern Blvd., Douglaston, NY 11362; phone 718-229-4000.

APEC Adventure Time: Heart-Shaped Animals

DATE:  Saturday, February 4                                   

TIME:   10:00am - 11:15am

AGES:  18-36 months old with parent participation

FEE:     $18 per child/parent combo

Have fun with shapes and make an animal craft out of hearts.  Toddlers and parents/caregivers enjoy some special time together as they socialize with other youngsters are learn about nature.  Each class focuses on a different science theme and includes live animal guests, art projects, trail walks, stories and more.  Limited to 8 participants. No siblings except babies staying in infant seats. This program for ages 18-36 months (parent participation) will take place at APEC at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston on Saturday, February 4 from 10:00am - 11:15am and is $18 per child.

Tween/Teen Yoga

AGES:  8 - 14 year olds

FEE:     $16 per person

Certified yoga instructor Grace Magee will lead your tween or teen out of their busy schedules into a place of serenity and strength.  Students of all levels will enjoy this class which mixes traditional poses, like sun salutations with partner work, breath/body awareness and strength builders.  They will leave feeling calm, confident and more aware of themselves and their surroundings.  Please bring a towel and water.   We will provide the mats and the fun!  Sign up for one class or all three per session.  Limited to 8 participants. Toddler Tales - I Love Animals!

Animal Tales: In the Snow: Valentine's Day at the Zoo

Dominican Desserts and Drinks with Chef Carolina

Dominican Chef Carolina Mourelle is back and this time on the menu - delicious desserts will be featured just in time for Valentine's Day.  To warm your palate the menu will include hot chocolate paired with "Jalao"  (coconut and honey truffles) complimented by a classic, "Tres Leches".   We will do the batter of the traditional Dominican cake for the demonstration of the cake, which participants can take home to bake. Young Chefs - "Lovely" Culinary Class

Vet Tech 101

All animals need care that goes beyond basics like food and water. Students can learn the specialized skills needed to keep our animals healthy at this program. From eye examinations to checking teeth, gums, and ears our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of keepings some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Students will earn a Vet Tech certificate of achievement. Limited to 6 participants. This program for ages 10 - 13 will take place at APEC at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston on Saturday, February 11 from 9:00 am - 11:00 am and is $25 per child.

EcoClub: Winter Wilderness Skills

Imagine a plane crashing in the tundra... amazingly you survive the crash, but can you survive the tundra? Come join us to learn essential survivals skills like helpful and harmful plant identification, water purification, and shelter building. Young discoverers will learn techniques used by Native Americans to live off of the land we're on today, and practice those skills themselves. Limited to 8 participants. This program for ages 8-12 will take place at APEC at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston on Saturday, February 18 from 12:30 - 2:30 pm and is $25 per child.

Stargazing Wonders - Astronomy February Night

One of the longest running astronomy programs in the city, now in its 20th year, will be led by seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich.  Each program features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars.  Handout information packet is included.  Limited to 20 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult). This program for  adults, children ages 9 and up will take place at APEC at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston on Saturday, February 18 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm and is $15 per person.

Winter Bird Walk for Beginners

AGES:  8 and up (children must be accompanied by adult)

Walk around Oakland Lake accompanied by Nancy Tognan of the Queens County Bird Club to look for ducks, coots, grebes, swans, geese and more.  Oakland Lake never complete freezes due to all of the spring water that constantly feeds into it. As a result, it becomes a freshwater duck magnet when other ponds are frozen.  Meet at APEC at 9:30 for a brief orientation; learn to use binoculars and a field guide.  Bring binoculars if you have them.  Although this walk is free, pre-registration is required as space is limited.  Limited to 20 participants. This program for ages 8 and up (children must be accompanied by adult) will take place at APEC at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston on Saturday, February 25 from 9:30 am - 11:30 am and is FREE.

Animal Care Trainee

Would you like to help us care for APEC's animals? This program teaches children about the unique job of an animal caretaker. Children will learn about the needs of APEC's animals, and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. Students will earn an animal care certificate. Limited to 8 participants. This program for ages 8-12 will take place at APEC at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston on Sunday, February 26 from 9:00 am - 11:00 am and is $23 per child.
