Titanic at seaStaatsburg, N.Y. (3/27/23) — Staatsburgh’s owners, Ruth and Ogden Mills, had tickets to sail on the R.M.S. Titanic’s scheduled second trip. This April, to make the 111th anniversary of the Titanic’s infamous maiden voyage, Staatsburgh State Historic Site will offer two special Titanic-themed programs: their popular “Tales of the Titanic” theme tour of the mansion, and “Staatsburgh & The Titanic: Objects & Stories” presentation.

“Tales of the Titanic” is as close as you can come to visiting the Titanic ... and still keeping your feet dry! This 90-minute tour, led by a costumed guide, explores the mansion while offering tales of bravery and tragedy. Staatsburgh’s opulent interiors bear a striking resemblance to the first class accommodations on the ship. The liner was designed to mirror the luxury that the millionaires were accustomed to in their lavish home, and the mansion’s servant’s quarters and work areas are striking similar to second class areas of the vessel. As the tour travels from room to room at Staatsburgh, stories and photographs from the Titanic’s last hours will add a poignant note.

New for this season, “Staatsburgh & The Titanic: Objects & Stories” is a sit-down alternative to the “Tales of the Titanic” theme tour. Presented in Staatsburgh’s historic dining room, this 30-minute talk explores Staatsburgh’s connections to the Titanic – from passenger lists to interior design – through objects and stories. Try on a Titanic-style life vest; send a message in Morse code; dress-up as a White Star Line officer, while exploring facsimile objects and historic images. A tour of the mansion’s main level, included in program admission, will be offered after the talk. Appropriate for ages +12 and up.

Reservations for each program are required at www.Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS. “Tales of the Titanic” will be presented on Saturdays, April 1, 8, 22, and 29; Sundays, April 2, 23, and 30; Thursdays, April 6, 13 and 27; and Friday, April 14 all at 2:00pm. The cost is $10; $8 for seniors and students; children 12 and under are free. “Staatsburgh & The Titanic” will be presented on Saturday, April 15 at 11:00am and 2:00pm and on Sunday, April 16 at 11:00am. The cost is $8; $6 for seniors and students; children 12 and under are free. Again, reservations are required at www.Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS.
