Lake Placid, N.Y. - With the heat index reaching record highs across the Northeast, wading into a cool mountain stream, lake or river can be the perfect antidote to the summer swelter. The Adirondack Region of Northern New York has more than 3,000 lakes and ponds, and 6,000 miles of rivers and streams. Below are a few local favorites to get away from the crowds and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. A few favorite local swimming holes and hikes: Lampson Falls - Located on the Grasse River in the Northwest region of the Adirondacks. A waterfall hike with a small beach that is handicap accessible to the top of the falls.  Buttermilk Falls - Located on the Raquette River, the entrance to the 40-foot falls is five miles southwest of Long Lake. Take NYS route 28/30 south for three miles to North Point Road or North 7.7 miles from the hamlet of Blue Mountain Lake. Turn SW onto North Point Road, there is a sign on the right for the falls and a parking area. Lake Clear Beach - Follow NYS Rte. 30 to just north of Lake Clear. An unmarked road off Route 30 provides access to the parking lot and a short trail to the beautiful 2000-foot beach. Map the location and directions on Auger Falls  - (I mile RT east) The unmarked trailhead is 1.7 miles north of Route 8 and Route 30 intersection. Trails lead to overlooks of a long series of cascades in a deep gorge lined with hemlocks. Banks are steep and slippery. Shelving Rock Falls - A 1.7 mile hike along the Eastern side of Lake George. A stony pool is located at the base of a 50-foot waterfall. Take exit 20 from I-87 the Adirondack Northway, exit east off the ramp to Rt. 9, and turn right on 149 follow 149 east past Rt 9L to Buttermilk Falls Road on the left. The name of the road changes from Buttermilk Falls to Sly Pond Road to Shelving Rock Road. Follow the road about 11 miles to the Hog Town Parking Lot. Prior to entering the parking lot, take the left hand turn in front of the signs. Follow this road till the bridge. Park either before or after the bridge. Rocky Falls near Heart Lake - (4.8 miles RT, moderate, parking fee). A pleasant woods walk to a series of cascades and a swimming hole near a lean-to. Located at the Adirondack Loj in Lake Placid near Heart Lake. Middle Saranac Beach - (1.2 miles RT, moderate) Located approximately 13 miles southwest of Saranac Lake on NYS Rte. 3, this short hike starts out with a climb beneath a large grove of hemlocks and arrives at a large open ledge that has views of Panther Pond and the distant High Peaks.
