Yonkers, NY (October 13, 2023)—Celebrate Halloweekend and Day of the Dead at the Hudson River Museum with family-friendly programs and activities on Saturday & Sunday, October 28 & 29, 11am–5pm. Explore our haunted historic home on a Gothic Glenview Tour, contribute to our Dia de Muertos community altar, learn about the stars in our spooky planetarium show, The Sky Tonight: Night Frights, create origami jack-o’-lanterns and sugar skull masks to take home in our Family Art Workshops, and meet some scaly friends at our live reptile program, The Wizard of Lizards! Come in costume and receive candy throughout the weekend.
Come celebrate Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a special holiday meant to celebrate death and life, when mourning is transformed into celebration. Participate in our community altar, or ofrenda, all weekend by bringing photos of departed loved ones; we recommend bringing copies of pictures to leave at the Museum. Ofrendas are believed to encourage visits from the departed souls as they hear their prayers, smell the food, and join the celebration.

Gothic Glenview Historic Home Tour Image
Experience the dark side of Glenview, our 1877 home on the National Register of Historic Places, designed by esteemed architect Charles W. Clinton. Learn about Victorian mourning practices followed by the family who lived here, while exploring the six fully restored period rooms on a spooky 45-minute guided tour. See the fine woodwork, furnishings, artwork, and magnificent architectural features that rank Glenview as one of the most important early Gilded Age residences open to the public.
Capacity is limited to 15 visitors per tour. Advance ticket purchase is encouraged. Recommended for ages 8+. Strollers are not permitted in Glenview. Please note, the Billiard Room and Nybylwyck Hall Dollhouse are temporarily closed to the public.
1–3pm
Family Art Workshop: Framed Loterías Image
During Día de los Muertos, it is very common to see families gathered together playing a favorite Mexican game, lotería, a game of chance similar to bingo that uses images on a deck of cards instead of numbered ping pong balls. Create colorful and vibrant frames to display lotería cards and take a little piece of Mexico home with you. Recommended for ages 4+.
1–4pm
Family Art Workshop: Sugar Skull Masks Image
Celebrate Día de los Muertos by decorating your own calavera, or crafted skull, an important part of the annual celebration. Wearing them as a mask ties the reality of death to more hopeful concepts of rebirth, resurrection, and regeneration. Recommended for ages 4+.
2pm
The Sky Tonight: Night Frights Planetarium Show Image
In celebration of Halloween, explore the scariest phenomena and creepiest sights the Universe has to offer. Bottomless black holes, ghostly nebulae, terrifying planets with rain made of liquid glass, and even some haunted-house worthy sites right here in the Solar System. But don’t worry, the full moon won’t turn you into a werewolf. Recommended for ages 8+; 60-minute live and interactive show. Advance reservations are encouraged.
3:30pm
We Are Aliens Planetarium Show Image
Earth. It’s now a small world. The human race is connected better and faster than ever before, but what about elsewhere? Could we one day be part of a galactic community sharing our knowledge and ideas? Or is Earth the only planet with life? We Are Aliens, narrated by Rupert Grint from the Harry Potter films, takes you on an epic ride in the hunt for the evidence of alien life. Watch the trailer. Recommended for ages 8+; 25-minute show plus Q&A. Advance reservations are strongly encouraged.
