Schenectady, N.Y. - Capital Region residents are in for a thrilling summer of circus arts and urban dance as Cirque Éloize returns to Proctors with the international hit iD.
Directed by Jeannot Painchaud, iD (pronounced eye-dee) is a high-energy production, blending circus, street dance and hip-hop. The show will be presented, in its Schenectady debut, at Proctors, 432 State Street, Schenectady, Aug 1-3 & 8-10. Tickets are on sale now at the Box Office at Proctors, by phone at 518.346.6204 and on the web at www.proctors.org.
Since the company was founded in 1993, Cirque Éloize has become a world leader in contemporary circus arts. Staging innovative productions, the company specializes in creating shows that combine circus arts with theater, dance and music in a groundbreaking manner. Cirque Éloize recently partnered with Cirque du Soleil,® based on a common creative vision and international entertainment appeal.
Set against an urban backdrop, iD features a cast of 15 acrobats and performers, and incorporates innovative multimedia elements, as well as a rock and electronica inspired soundtrack created by composers Jean-Phi Goncalves and Alex McMahon. In Cirque Éloize's iD, acrobatic disciplines are combined with the energy of hip-hop and urban dances, giving a fresh and high octane spin to modern circus.
The show's Director, Jeannot Painchaud says, "It is with great pleasure that we bring this urban tale, filled with color, passion and energy to Schenectady for the very first time. In keeping with the company's tradition, with iD we've again combined different art forms-this time urban dance-to infuse their energy and edginess into the acrobatic performances. Now imagine two rival gangs, sharing a public place at the heart of a city, and seeking to express their iDentity and inDividuality, and you have iD."
Since the show began touring in 2010, it has received rave reviews from the public and critics alike.
The Toronto Star wrote, "You're not going to find a more energetic, mind-blowing, roof raising piece of entertainment than iD," while The Boston Globe said, "Astonishing! A truly memorable evening with propulsive music and explosive dancing!"
The London Telegraph recently called iD, "A dangerously beautiful spectacle." In April, Spain's La Vanguardia proclaimed the show, "The West Side Story of the 21st century." And The Miami Herald raved, "Jaw-dropping entertainment! An eloquent testament to imagination, artistry and the child within us all!"
Cirque Éloize's iD is directed by Jeannot Painchaud. The set design, illustrations and video projections were created by Robert Massicotte, in collaboration with Alexis Laurence. The music was composed by Jean-Phi Goncalves and Alex McMahon, while the lighting is by Nicolas Descoteaux. Krzysztof Soroczynski acted as show acrobatic designer and head-trainer. iD also includes an artistic contribution from Mourad Merzouki.
Cirque Éloize's iD will be presented at Proctors, 432 State Street, Schenectady, 7:30 p.m. Friday; and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 1-3 & 8-10. Tickets, $20-$50, are on sale now at the Box Office at Proctors, 518.346.6204 and proctors.org.
