Waterloo, N.Y. - For the first time, del Lago Resort & Casino will be awarding four scholarships to participate in sommelier classes at Canandaigua-based New York Kitchen. Each valued at $2,200, these scholarships will allow four industry professionals or wine enthusiasts to complete Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 and Level 3 in wine certification courses at no cost. Interested applicants can apply between Jun. 28 and Jul. 4 by submitting a 300-word essay describing their passion for wine and its impact on a culinary experience to WSET@NYKitchen.com.

“This is our first time awarding this type of scholarship and we can’t think of a better fit than supporting the sommelier programs running right in own backyard. As an ongoing partner and sponsor of New York Kitchen, we’re always looking for new and exciting collaborations that speak to our collective missions,” said Carter Bair, Vice President of Marketing for del Lago Resort & Casino. “We’re proud of our staff’s expertise in the wine selections we’re able to serve at Portico. We hope this opportunity awards a similar level of knowledge and wine appreciation to four lucky locals.”

del Lago’s celebrity restaurant Portico by Fabio Viviani has been recognized three years in a row by Wine Spectator with an Award of Excellence as well as being named “Best Wine Display”.

As a culinary industry leader, New York Kitchen aims to educate, engage and excite visitors in a celebration of the agriculture and craft beverages available within the Finger Lakes region. In addition to its full-service restaurant, NYK Café, and tasting room, which features a rotating selection of New York State products, New York Kitchen is known for educational hands-on cooking and craft beverage pairing classes that take place in their state-of-the-art kitchens.

“We are very fortunate for del Lago’s support of our mission and participants choosing New York Kitchen for their WSET certification,” said Alyssa Belasco, Executive Director at New York Kitchen. “We are one of the only locations in the Northeast to offer Levels 1-3 of the WSET certification program and appreciate that del Lago understands the importance of encouraging individuals to dive deeper into the exciting and complex qualities of wine through tasting and theory.”

The WSET Level 2 in Award Wines certification gives beginners a core understanding of a range of wines. Participants will explore the major grape varieties of the world and the regions in which these grapes are grown. The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines certification provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and wine making. By completion of the course, participants will be able to properly taste wines, describe the characteristics and evaluate the wine quality.

Interested applicants are asked to apply by submitting their 300-word essay via email to WSET@NYKitchen.com. A selection committee of executives from both del Lago and New York Kitchen will select four deserving applicants to attend the certification courses at no cost. Scholarship winners will be announced Friday, July 9.
