Schenectady, N.Y. - Disney's NEWSIES will launch its North American tour at Proctors in Schenectady this fall, creating an artistic and anticipated economic boon for upstate New York.
The NEWSIES North American tour will tech at Proctors from September 15-October 10, in preparation for performances October 11-17, 2014. A show's tech period, generally requiring between two and four weeks, is the phase in its development when the production is readied for launch-a large venue is rented to facilitate the assembly of sets; costumes are fitted; performance cues are choreographed; and microphone frequencies are coordinated.
Once the tech period concludes, the show will normally hold several public performances at the venue and stimulate hundreds of thousands of dollars of supplemental economic activity through additional use of the venue and audience spending.
The NEWSIES North American tour launch in Schenectady will serve as an economic catalyst for the community as cast, crew and locally-hired stagehands will patronize area hotels, restaurants and other businesses during the five weeks when they will live and work in the city.
NEWSIES will be the first show that Disney Theatrical Productions has prepared and premiered in New York State, outside of New York City.
Proctors is excited about entering into this partnership with Disney and bringing NEWSIES to a new audience; and thrilled that the launch coincides with the completion of extensive marquee and auditorium restoration projects. The venerable State Street theatre also looks forward to hosting more tour launches in the future.
"Broadway is New York," says Proctors CEO Philip Morris. "Having Disney launch Newsies at Proctors is an important step in bringing both the art and economic incentive of Broadway to upstate New York, where it belongs."
"Since its first performance on Broadway, the response to NEWSIES has been overwhelming and remains palpable," said Jack Eldon, Vice President, Domestic, Disney Theatrical Productions. "We are so proud to launch the tour at Proctors in October and cannot wait to share this thrilling and inspiring story with audiences in Schenectady."
NEWSIES, the new American musical, features a Tony® Award-winning score with music by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,' who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys' expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what's right.
