Lake Placid, N.Y. - With golf season approaching in the Adirondacks, the Whiteface Club and Resort, on the shores of Lake Placid, has collected another prestigious award from Golfweek Magazine. The John Van Kleek-redesigned layout, in consultation with Walter Hagen, is ranked 12th in New York State among Golfweek Magazine's 2013 Best Courses You Can Play. In the publication's Top 15, the Whiteface Club is in the company of two-time U.S. Open host Bethpage Black, two of the courses at Turning Stone in Central New York, Saratoga National and Ravenwood, outside Rochester. It is the first time the Whiteface Club has appeared in this category. "We are very pleased and honored to have been recognized for the second time in nine years by Golfweek in the Top 15 courses in New York State," said Mark Sperling, General Manager of the Whiteface Club Companies. "It is a testimony to our team of groundskeepers, superintendent and our legendary pro, J. Peter Martin. They are the reasons for our recognition and success. We are committed to providing the best golfing experience for our members and guests, both on and off the course, and will strive for the number one rating as we move forward." The challenging layout, carved from the Adirondack pines 115 years ago, plays to a par of 71 and benefits from a state-of-the-art irrigation system. Its' dramatic signature hole, the par 5 sixth, presents a stunning view of nearby Whiteface Mountain, site of the 1980 Winter Olympic alpine skiing events. This 490 yard hole starts with a precipitous drop from tee to fairway, followed by a dog leg left, and concludes with a climb of several stories over the final 90 yards to the green. Also, the par three, 14th hole, measuring 211 yards uphill to a narrow, undulating green with out- of-bounds on the left and bunkers on both sides, is arguably the most difficult par in the Adirondacks. Discerning golfers in Lake Placid will not only enjoy the course, but other amenities, too, on the 400 acre property. Those include tennis, marina, The Café on the Green adjacent to the practice area, Moose Lodge Boathouse with dining overlooking Lake Placid lake and a popular Wedding Garden, recently named among the best in the state for 2013 by The Knot. All of this is surrounded by the 46 Adirondack High Peaks. "I am very appreciative of the Board of Directors and owners of the Whiteface Club Companies," continued Sperling. "Bart van der Meer, Pat Barrett, Ed Weibrecht and Greg Peacock have been supportive of making our course the best in the region from day one." The Whiteface Club and Resort is sister property of the AAA Four Diamond-rated Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid. These time-honored partners, separated by less than four miles, collaborate with attractive Stay and Play packages. "We are proud of our staff at the Whiteface Club and Resort for securing the Golfweek ranking," said Weibrecht, owner of Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa, whose lodging property has received the Four Diamond designation for the past 29 consecutive years. "Each and every staff member works diligently to present the golf course in immaculate condition day after day. The reward from Golfweek, together with the many compliments we hear from the players, tells us we are doing things correctly and making people happy with the experience. I cannot thank the staff enough for the pride they take in their work." The golf course is slated to open for the season May 3 (weather permitting) and will feature a slate of exciting golf events. Among the highlights: The J. Peter Martin Whiteface Open, July 13-14, brings the region's top men and women amateurs together for a 36-hole competition; The Whiteface Club Championship, another 36-hole event, is set for Aug. 17-18 for members of the club; The Adirondack Open and Pro-Am, part of the Cancun Sunbelt Senior Tour, Aug. 27-30, finds outstanding senior professionals tackling the difficult Whiteface Club track in a 54-hole stroke play format as they aspire to reach the Champions Tour. Inside Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa, guests will find 131 lodging units, a world-class spa, the Four Diamond The View Restaurant, as well as Taste Bistro and Bar. The hotel overlooks Mirror Lake as does its' Cottage Café. The popular pub offers indoor and outdoor service, and provides a perfect conclusion to a round of golf. The seven-acre resort property is just a two-minute walk from the village's alpine-themed Main Street. This friendly corridor is dotted with many locally owned shops, several outlet stores, numerous restaurants and several cozy bars. With the 2014 Winter Games now less than a year away in Russia, Lake Placid's famed Olympic venues, open year-round for the enjoyment of residents and guests, are just a drive and a wedge from the Whiteface Club, Mirror Lake Inn and Main Street. That Olympic experience, coupled with gold medal golf at the Whiteface Club and Resort, is a combination of activities that can only be found in Lake Placid.
