Buffalo and Erie County Botanical GardensBuffalo, N.Y. - The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is an inspiring place to learn about horticulture, art and wellness. A Horticulture Certificate Series - Horticulture III will begin January 25 and a Horticulture Certificate Series - Horticulture IV will begin March 28.  Beginner, Intermediate, and Plein Air Watercolor classes will be offered in several different sessions beginning February 25, and two sessions of Yoga, Gentle Hatha and Gentle Power Flow will be offered beginning March 3.

David Clark, Horticulturist and CNLP, teaches enlightening Horticulture Certificate Programs: Horticulture I, II, III, IV, V and VI at the Botanical Gardens. David is a dynamic instructor with a wealth of knowledge. He is quickly becoming one of the country’s noted garden speakers. His classes are very popular as he conveys subject matter with infectious enthusiasm. These classes are great for beginners who would like to learn more about gardening as well as for experts looking to refine their skills.

Horticulture III begins on January 25 and includes five classes.  Topics in this series are comprised of: Sustainable Landscaping Practices on January 25, Gardening with Native Plants on February 1, Shade Gardening on February 22, Small Space and Urban Gardening on February 29 and Beneficial Insects and Pollinators on March 14, which is also National Learn About Butterflies Day.

Horticulture IV begins on March 28 and includes five classes.  Topics in this series are comprised of: Gardening for Wildlife on March 28, Four Seasons Gardening on April 18, Creative Containers and Raised Beds on April 2, Herbs and Medicinal Plants on May 30 and Backyard Ecology on June 13.

Horticulture classes will be held Saturdays from 11:00 am-1:00 pm, and participants are welcome to enroll in all classes for a certificate or for individual classes to brush up on skills.  Classes are held in the Administration Building located on the Botanical Gardens’ campus.  Tuition for each series is $25 for individual classes for the general public and $20 for individual classes for Botanical Gardens’ Members. Adult Watercolor Classes, held at the Botanical Gardens, are taught by professional artist Joan Saba.  Her talent is exceptional and her hands-on teaching style caters to all skill levels. Beginner Watercolor classes include introductory techniques and concepts.  Students will learn the basics of how to paint with watercolors. As students advance through the classes they will discover how their skills grow. Tuesday morning beginner sessions will be held from 8:45 am - 11:15 am and will include: BM4 - February 24, March 3, 10 and 17; BM5 - March 24, 31, April 7 and 14; BM6 - April 22, 28, May 5 and 19.  Wednesday evening beginner sessions will be held from 5:45 pm - 8:15 pm and will include: BE4 - February 26, March 4, 11 and 18; BE5 - March 25, April 1, 8 and 15; BE6 - April 22, 29, May 6 and 20.  

Intermediate Watercolor and Plein Air Watercolor Classes are for students with previous experience who would like to move beyond the basics.  Intermediate sessions will be held on Tuesday Evenings from 5:45 pm - 8:15pm and will include: IE4 - February 25, March 3, 10 and 17; IE5 - March 24, 31, April 7 and 14; IE6 - April 21, 28, May 5 and 19.

Sessions will be held on Tuesday mornings from 8:45 am - 11:15 am and will include: PA1 - May 26, June 2, 9 and 16.  Tuesday evening classes will be held 5:45 pm - 8:15 pm and will include: PA2 - February 26, March 5 and 12, 19.  Wednesday evening classes will be held from 5:45 pm - 8:15 pm. Sessions include PA3 - May 27, June 3, 10 and the final dates is to be determined.

Find balance both mentally and physically during yoga held inside the Botanical Gardens. These sessions are led by Leanne Oldenbrook, owner of Oasis Yoga and Wellness and yoga instructor of 14 years. Gentle Hatha Yoga consists of gentle stretches to warm up joints and muscles, postures designed to increase strength, flexibility and balance, and time for relaxation and meditation. This class is suitable for all levels but especially students with injuries or limitations. Gentle Power Flow Yoga, is a more vigorous practice featuring relaxation, warm up stretches, series of sequences, and Pilates postures designed to build strength, endurance, and body heat. 

Both sessions of yoga will be offered Tuesday evenings.  Gentle Hatha Yoga will run from 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm and Gentle Power Flow Yoga will take place 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm. Three ten-week sessions will be offered.  Session I will be held March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, April 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5.  Session II will take place May 12, 19, June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, July 7, 14 and 21 and Session III will be held July 28, August 4, 11,18, 25, September 1, 15, 22, 29 and October 6.  Yoga at the Botanical Gardens is sponsored by Mercy Hospital, part of Catholic Health.

Students may enroll in a full session or individual classes.  The ten-week sessions are $100 for a full series or $15 per class.  Yoga classes are free to eligible BlueCross BlueShield of WNY members.
