Hauppauge, N.Y. - The Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau (LICVB) Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/LongIslandNewYork has reached over 100,000 fans in under eleven months, hitting 100,236 on Apr. 26, 2010. The creation of the Long Island, New York Facebook page is part of an overall interactive strategy the LICVB developed to better reach potential visitors to Long Island in the places they are looking. This includes a presence on Twitter and You Tube, along with an expanded presence on TripAdvisor and other travel blogs. In addition, the LICVB is planning a full scale re-launch of its website http://www.discoverlongisland.com/ by July 2010, which will incorporate the latest tools and technology to make it faster and easier to plan a visit to Long Island. The Long Island, New York Facebook page, incorporates scenic imagery and conversation that invites feedback, along with regular updates on upcoming events. It allows the LICVB to interact and communicate with potential visitors to Long Island and to receive input on the places and events that interest people. It features over 800 photos submitted by fans, and thousands of fan comments; it also generates nearly one million impressions each month. The page was created and managed within the LICVB's own marketing department as the official tourism promotion site for Long Island. It is updated weekly and reaches fans as far as India and Japan, although the largest number of fans reside within the United States. New York City brings the greatest number of fans to the page; and seventy-eight percent of all fans are between 18-55, with 62% female. The Long Island, New York Facebook page is used primarily to interact with the leisure visitor to Long Island. The page was started in June 2009 and received its first feedback from a fan in July 2009. That post read, in response to images the LICVB posted of its beaches: "Hey Michelle, how do you like these Long Island beaches?" Since then, the page has spread primarily through viral means, with one fan notifying a friend, who signs up to become a Long Island fan, and so on. Facebook's latest initiative to allow people to ‘like' a page should also help build the LICVB fan base. The LICVB post that received the most amount of feedback featured a beautiful image of the Jones Beach water tower and lifeguard boat. The LICVB post reads: "Thanks for all your comments; we love it here too. Keep your thoughts and memories coming and let us know if there's anything you'd like to see posted." Since the Facebook page was set up as a business page, Facebook does not allow the page to actively seek or solicit friends or fans, except through the Facebook ad program. Establishing a business page does allow the page administrator to track demographics and offers other useful tools not available on personal pages. The page has become a valuable part of the way the LICVB communicates with potential visitors.
