Orange County TourismIt's springtime in the Hudson Valley!

Hudson Valley, N.Y. - The tulips are blooming, the music is playing, the wine is flowing, and the circus is coming to town. Orange County celebrates the Merry Month of May! Let your spirits run free with a dance around the Maypole and the sheer joy of surrounding yourself with thousands of tulips. It's time for outdoor festivals and warm weather fun.

Fantasy and fun ring in the season at Brid's Closet Beltane/Spring Festival on the beautiful grounds of Palaia Vineyards. It's a family-friendly May 3rd happening filled with Tarot readers, psychics, games of chance, belly dancing, drumming circles, workshops, demonstrations, and over 40 vendors. Musical entertainment, food, wine, and a Maypole dance will have you spinning with joy. Renaissance apparel is perfect for this May Day celebration. Advance tickets are available on line. There's more wine to be tasted that afternoon at The 2014 New York Riesling Experience at Applewood Winery, the oldest working farm in Orange County. Admission to this adults-only affair on May 3rd and 4th includes food and wine pairings, recipes, and live entertainment. Perhaps you'll catch the start of delicate pink and white apple blossoms in their orchards.

BIG is the operative word for two very special May events. May 3rd is opening day for the Zhang Huan: Evoking Tradition exhibition at Storm King Art Center. Six large scale works by this Chinese contemporary artist have been placed in the beautiful Storm King landscape. His towering Three Legged Buddha was installed at the famous 500-acre sculpture park in 2007. View a total of 15 sculptures and works on paper through which Huan focuses on Buddhist imagery and Chinese traditional culture, on display until November 9th. May 23rd through the 26th, follow the Zerbini Family Circus under the big top for high flying fun. There are 6 lively shows on the grounds of Museum Village in Monroe where jugglers, trapeze artists, high wire acrobats, and clowns will bring on some really big smiles.

Tulips in Bloom at the Orange County Arboretum in Montgomery should be at their peak between Mother's Day and the 4th week of May. Count on the flowering brilliants and pastel blossoms of the flowering trees to create a not-to-be-missed spring spectacular at the Thomas Bull Memorial Park garden. On May 18th, just a few miles east in Newburgh, another colorful display will decorate the Campus of Mount St. Mary College at Artists on Campus. Browse original paintings, prints, drawings, photography, and sculpture by numerous artists in the region from 11 to 4, but plan to arrive by 12:30 pm if you want to indulge in the delicious Taste of Newburgh. For a $30 donation, you'll have 2 hours to enjoy sumptuous tastings and live jazz under the tent right next to the art show. The Newburgh show doesn't include crafts, but they're the main feature of the Sugar Loaf Spring Festival happening the following weekend on May 24th and 25th. Special vendors and live music complement the unique shops lining the streets of this 250-year-old art and craft community.

Gentle spring breezes bring not just the scent of spring flowers, but also the lilt of live music. Soothe your soul at The Classic Choral Society's Spring Concert, "Requiem for the Living." The acoustics in the historic churches hosting the free 4pm performances on May 4th and 11th are fantastic! Bring your lawn blankets or beach chairs for the Bob Dylan Tribute Weekend at Warwick Valley Winery from May 24th through the 26th, noon to 5pm. Tickets go on sale May 1st. Catch the scent of apple tree blossoms blowin' in the wind from the winery's orchard. Switch to music of the German variety on tap at the German Springfest at Gus's Restaurant and Tavern in New Windsor. It's a traditional Bockfest with beer, wine, spirits, and homemade German specialties on the menu. From May 30th to June 1st, polka across the dance floor under the tent all weekend long.

Back to the 50's! Take in a movie from the comfort of your own car at the Warwick Drive-In Theater. Built in 1958, it's been modernized with digital projection and shows up to 6 feature films on 3 different screens. Try the egg rolls at their snack bar! The historic Paramount Theater in Middletown is a grand setting for another kind of movie experience. Catch stars on and off the screen during the Hoboken International Film Festival, from May 30th to June 5th. Comedian Gilbert Gottfried hosts the gala awards ceremony on opening night. Be sure to see "Rock Story," a mystery with a powerful twist ending. Cutting edge films will light up the screen whenever you go.
