Staatsburg, N.Y. — The beautiful grounds of Staatsburgh State Historic Site, along the Hudson River, will be the setting of a one-hour nature program for children ages 6 to 9 on Sunday, July 16 at 10 a.m. Staff will lead participants on a walk focused on trees and creatures that live in the site’s environment and then offer a craft activity using objects gathered on the hike.
The program cost is $5 per child, $12 for a family of up to 3 children. Advanced registration is required at https://NatureCraft.Eventbrite.com. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The walk is approximately a half mile on uneven terrain. Bad weather will cancel this program. Visitors may also enjoy strolling the grounds of the site, picnicking by the Hudson River, or hiking the woodland trails in adjacent Mills and Norrie State Parks. Tours of the site’s Gilded Age mansion can be reserved at www.Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS (site admission applies for adults; age 12 and younger are free).
Staatsburgh was the autumn estate of Ruth Livingston Mills, a prominent figure in New York Society, and her husband, industrialist and philanthropist Ogden Mills. The estate grounds were designed to provide the Mills Family with a picturesque view of their natural surroundings, and celebrate the property’s magnificent setting along the Hudson River. Today, Mills Memorial State Park is a beautiful location for outings, hikes and other outdoor activities, that is open every day from dawn to dusk. A free scavenger hunt, designed for all ages, is available as another way to enjoy the property: to access the scavenger hunt, please visit www.millsfriends.org.
