NEW! Botanical ClassesBuffalo, NY - The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens announced they will host a wide variety of NEW live online classes this spring and summer.  The newest online series is entitled Botanical Extras that includes several interesting, informative and entertaining classes; The Fantastic World of Mosses on May 21, The History and Future of the Botanical Gardens on June 4, Floriography: The Secret Language of Flowers on June 11, Dendrology Demystified on June 18, Indulge - Delectable Botanical Luxuries on June 25, The English Plantswomen on July 9 and Gardening for Butterflies on July 16.  An online Succulent Garden Workshop will also be offered on June 10.

On May 21, participants can explore The Fantastic World of Mosses. There are over 16,000 species of mosses and they are wonderfully special plants that are worthy of a closer look. Learn about moss biology and discover some common species growing on rocks, in your lawn or in the forest.

The History and Future of the Botanical Gardens will be held on June 4.  Learn about the rich history of the Botanical Gardens through good times and bad – even when it faced demolition twice. This interesting class will bring participants up to present day and what the future holds for this remarkable conservatory. This class is free for Botanical Gardens’ Members.

Floriography: The Secret Language of Flowers will take place on June 11.  Participants will learn about the origins of the “flower code,” fads and the current use of flower language in the floral industry and floral meanings in everyday life. This class will also explore the meanings of specific plants with a few surprises thrown in.

Dendrology Demystified will be held on June 18.  Explore the wonderful world of trees and learn how to identify common species and hear interesting life history stories of trees of note from the Botanical Gardens’ Arboretum.

Indulge - Delectable Botanical Luxuries will be held on June 25.  Many things come from plants in our everyday lives and this fun program will explore popular drinks, interesting foods, chocolate and more.  Participants will then delve into plants as perfumes, aromatherapy and medicine.

The English Plantswomen class will be held on July 9.  Learn about some of the visionaries in garden design from Gertrude Jekyll to Beth Chatto. These inspiring British women contributed so many important ideas to gardening.

Gardening for Butterflies, held on July 16, will help participants learn how to identify different butterfly species (and their caterpillars) seen in Western New York.  This interesting program will also explore what plants will best attract butterflies and how to incorporate those plants into home gardens.

Classes will be held live online via ZOOM Meeting from 7:00pm to 8:00pm on the dates listed. Ticket prices are $12 for the general public and $10 for Botanical Gardens’ Members. Register online at buffalogardens.com.

For the first time ever, our Succulent Garden Workshop will be held online via ZOOM Meeting on June 10 at 7:00pm. Participants will design a unique succulent container garden while learning more about these exciting low-maintenance plants. They will also learn how succulents grow and how to propagate them. Each participant can also add some creative touches to their arrangement. Curbside pickup for boxed materials for the workshop will be held at Botanical Gardens on June 10 from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
