New York, NY – November 16, 2017: There are more than 50 ski areas in New York State, more than any other state, with slopes already open or opening this weekend. Major public and private investments to upgrade ski areas and ski towns are creating better dining, retail and tourism infrastructure to generate year-round visitation in mountain communities.

Lodge renovations and upgraded snowmaking capabilities draw skiers to Gore Mountain

Undeveloped wilderness views and four sprawling peaks of trails and lifts draw skiers to North Creek’s Gore Mountain for a world-class ski experience. For the 2017-18 season, Gore has added more than 130 additional high-efficiency snow guns and renovated three lodges. The mid-mountain Saddle Lodge doubled in size, adding restaurant options with a view. The original 1967 gondola unloading station at the summit was restored and is now the Straight Brook Lodge, with restrooms, vending machines, and an inviting space to warm up. The new Northwoods Lodge provides extra space for both the rental/repair shop and Gore’s popular Snow Sports School.

Gore’s 2017-18 frequent skier cards provide savings for all ages – the Empire Card for adults ages 20+ ($99), Student Card for ages 13 – 19 or full-time college students ($69) and Snowball Card for ages 7 – 12 ($49). Oak Mountain upgrades beginner area and installs new snowmaking equipment

Oak Mountain in Speculator is ideal for families to enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and snowshoe trails. Snow Ridge Ski Resort in Turin receives 230" of snow annually and renowned meteorologists have compared its quality to that of some of the best ski regions in the world. West Mountain in Queensbury is making a mountain of improvements for this winter season that avid snowboarders and skiers will find exciting. They have significantly widened and added snow guns to their black diamond trail called “The Cure,” a steep, narrow, overgrown chute that has never had snowmaking and rarely is open.  Also added is a new magic carpet lift, snow tubes, lighting and major renovations to Northwest Lodge.

A “Learn to Turn” package for newbies includes a lesson, lift ticket and rental for $85 (ages 4 -12) and $90 (13 and up), while other enticing deals include “Ladies, Lift, Lesson & Lunch,” “Super Seniors” and “Mountain Masters.”

Whiteface Mountain renovates lodges, upgrades snowmaking and grooming equipment

Whiteface Mountain offers the greatest vertical drop on the east coast and Olympic heritage galore in nearby Lake Placid. Recent upgrades include renovating the Adirondack Base Lodge and parking lot, and expanding the learning center and café at the Bear Den Lodge. Snowmaking and grooming upgrades are also underway to provide skiers with the best possible powder.

CATSKILLS

Upgrades at Belleayre Ski Center include a high-speed gondola, lodge updates and new trail

New York State is investing in upgrades at Belleayre Ski Center in Highmount to attract more visitors and build on the burgeoning tourism industry in The Catskills. Enhancements include a new, high-speed gondola currently under construction, and upgraded, modern amenities for the lodges. The expansion will allow for more skiing trails and year-round recreational facilities.

Once completed, the “Catskill Thunder” high-speed gondola will feature 65 cabins that can transport up to eight adult guests per cabin at a maximum speed of 1,000 feet per minute. This will increase the mountain’s skier capacity and provide a better user experience. Deer Run Trail will be widened and a new trail will be added to the west side of the mountain. Discovery Lodge and Overlook Lodge will see improvements, and there will be a skier tunnel and new energy-efficient ski guns.

Plattekill Mountain has completed updates ahead of the season to bring an elevated skiing and snowboarding experience

Plattekill Mountain in Roxbury has been busy with updates ahead of the 2017-18 season. New snowmaking has been added to the "Shredded Mozzarella" trail as they plan a "21 Gun Salute” to bury it with snow and make an all new terrain park with 1900 feet of pipe and 21 snow guns. Additionally, there have been several base lodge improvements, most notably a more accessible entrance and easier access to the Learning Center, plus all new ski and snowboard gear added to the rental shop.

$2 million investment in Windham Mountain demonstrates commitment to snowmaking efficiency and environment

The Catskills’ Windham Mountain offers 269 acres with 54 trails and six terrain parks for skiers by all ages and abilities. Thanks to $2 million in capital investments, Windham Mountain Resort has continued its commitment to snowmaking efficiency and environmental consciousness with a new fully automated snow gun system, nearly three miles of new snowmaking pipe and the addition of a new PistenBully 400 Winch Cat to the grooming fleet.

Windham Mountain Resort’s popular “Own It!” program has expanded to include snowboarding. The three-day, first-timer program includes lessons, rental equipment and lower-mountain lift tickets. Windham also offers a $199 three-day beginner skier/snowboarder program for all ages, which includes lessons, rental equipment and lift tickets.

Located in the quaint Village of Ellicottville, Holiday Valley is a perfect family-friendly all-season resort. In the winter, the resort offers skiing, snowboarding, tubing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing with a range of kid-friendly activities, including exploring secret trails through the woods, flying down the Mountain Coaster and the Winter Carnival.

Special packages will attract skiers and snowboarders to Bristol Mountain this year

The first New York State ski area to open this season, Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua is known for having the highest vertical from the Adirondacks to the Rockies at 1,200 feet. Special packages this winter will attract skiers and snowboarders. For first time skiers 13 years and older, the new $59 Learn to Ski & Snowboard Package includes a two-hour morning lesson, two-hour afternoon lesson plus rental equipment and lift ticket. The continuation of this program offers a three-time lift, lesson and rental package for $199, or $240 which includes a free pair of Elan skis. These options are perfect for the guest looking for a weeklong Learn to Ski or Snowboard experience.  Guests seven and under always receive a free lift ticket with an adult lift ticket or package purchase. 

On Saturday and Sunday evenings from 4 p.m. to close, Bristol Mountain offers Family & Friends Night including discounted equipment rental and a free 5 p.m. beginner class.  A group of three can ski or snowboard for $75.

More than $5.5 million in upgrades at Greek Peak Mountain Resort include a quad chairlift, more snowmaking equipment and base area building renovations

Under new ownership since 2013, Cortland’s Greek Peak Mountain Resort continues to invest in the mountain with improvements exceeding $5.5 million. Updates include the addition of a quad chairlift and upgrades to the base area buildings for an elevated après ski experience. The resort has added 14 new HKD SV Snow Guns, a SMI Tower Fan and a Tech Alpine Fan Gun, as well as replacing 750 feet of snowmaking pipe to increase snowmaking capacity.

For the 2017-18 season, the resort has upgraded their rental equipment and tubing center, allowing guests to hit the slopes faster. Greek Peak is incorporating some of their downhill mountain bike trails into their glade ski/ride trail map, increasing the trail count from 42 to 54. These additional glades will be natural, ungroomed trails that many riders seek for a backcountry, adrenaline-pumping experience.
