An Erie Canal Odyssey: The Photographs of Frank Forte

Utica, N.Y. – The Oneida County History Center presents the work of local award-winning photographer Frank Forte. An Erie Canal Odyssey depicts communities, structures, boats, people, and activities along the canals of New York State. Forte began exploring and photographing parts of New York canal system in 2019. This exhibit depicts the first part of his self-commissioned project to visit and document New York’s entire canal system. It will be on display at the Oneida County History Center through August, 2021.
Forte credits staff of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor in Waterford, NY, for providing guidance and support for the project. Their encouragement and inspiration helped make this exhibit a reality, he said.
Frank Forte is a commercial photographer based in Utica, New York. His work covers a wide variety of subjects including architecture, landscapes, historic places. His iconic picture of the tugboat Erie won first place in the Classic Canals category of the 2019 Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor photo contest. He has exhibited pictures at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Art Festival, the Edith Barrett Fine Arts Gallery at Utica College, and the Gannett Art Gallery at SUNY Polytechnic Institute and, most recently, the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse.
Forte was raised in Utica, graduated TR Proctor High, attended MVCC and transferred to a fine art program at SUNY New Paltz. He resides in town of Fairfield in Herkimer County with wife Caren.
