Garnerville, N.Y. - CreativeWorks at GARNER, a joint project of the Arts Council of Rockland and GARNER Arts launches its first program on Friday, May 9th with a special appearance by Mayra Casales and CocoMama. This event is a public celebration of CreativeWorks at GARNER, the new alternative, ultidisciplinary performance series located in the GARNER Historic District at the Garnerville Arts & Industrial Center.
CocoMama is an internationally-based all women band led by Mayra Casales. Born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Miami, Mayra Casales's earliest influences began with the Afro-Cuban musical culture of her childhood. In Miami, Mayra studied with Carlos "Potato" Valdez. Before long she was performing with some of the biggest names in Latin and Cuban music including Celia Cruz, Machito, Joe Cuba, and Miguelito Valdez. In 1978, Mayra moved to New York City where she played with Phyllis Hyman, Carmen Lundy, and Jon Lucien, as well as such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Barretto.
