Exhibition Tour Overview

In celebration of the centennial anniversary of the completion of the Buffalo Mural in Coe Hall, Planting Fields Foundation presents an exhibition on the work of Robert Winthrop Chanler (1872-1930), titled The Electrifying Art and Spaces of Robert Winthrop Chanler.   A rare opportunity to view decorative screens and panels from private collections throughout America, the exhibition highlights Chanler’s depictions of frenzied worlds from the early 1910s to the late 1920s. Visitors will learn about his work in the context of the artistic developments in America in the early 20th century, his relationship to the wealthy patrons of the Gilded Age, and the preservation challenges presented by the Buffalo Mural in Coe Hall.  Gain a deeper understanding of the historical significance of the screens and their design function, as well as Chanler’s eccentric persona and the characters around him throughout his life.

Process

•  A Planting Fields Foundation docent will meet each group in the Dining Room of Coe Hall.

•  The 1-hour tour will begin with an introduction to the artist in the adjacent Breakfast Room,

site of the Buffalo Mural completed by Chanler a hundred years ago, followed by Mai Coe’s bedroom, the “Lace Room” on the 2nd floor.

•  Visitors will be guided to the exhibition in the Great Hall to view 12 screens painted by Chanler and a collection of special objects and historic photographs from his life including a

portrait of Chanler by French artist Man Ray.

•  At the end of the tour, visitors will have the opportunity to shop exhibition merchandise at the new museum shop located in the Gallery. Members receive 10% off their purchase!

Chanler Exhibition Celebration

On Friday, July 31st between 4:00 and 9:00 PM the Foundation will host a public opening reception of the exhibition.  Attendees will arrive at Coe Hall 10 minutes before their ticketed time slot for a special tour (5-person maximum) that will lead to the Buffalo Mural in the Breakfast Room and Mai Coe's bedroom before stopping in the Gallery for a 15-minute performance from Long Island Chamber Music.  The program will feature 3 diverse composers, Amy Beach, Maurice Ravel, and William Grant Still, who were contemporaries of Chanler and draw musical parallels to the dynamic use of color, texture, and mood of Chanler's art.

After viewing the exhibition in the Great Hall, guests are invited to step out into the beautiful Cloister Garden for a cocktail and to conclude the evening with a guided garden tour offered every hour from

5:00 - 8:00 PM.   For added flavor and to evoke the colorful creations of Robert Winthrop Chanler, all are encouraged to come dressed in a favorite animal or flora print!

Tickets: $35 Members / $45 Non-Members

About Planting Fields Foundation

Planting Fields Foundation strives to preserve and make relevant to all audiences the heritage of Planting Fields, an early 20th century 409-acre estate, designed as an integrated composition of the built and natural world.  Founded in 1952 by William R. Coe, the Foundation is a not for profit public educational foundation chartered by the New York State Board of Regents and tax exempt under the status for a 501C3 organization. Located in Oyster Bay, New York and originally landscaped by the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts, the Arboretum grounds feature 409 acres of greenhouses, rolling lawns, formal gardens, woodland paths and outstanding plant collections.  The original historic estate buildings remain intact including Coe Hall, a 65-room Tudor Revival mansion designed by Walker & Gillette.  The interior of the house is a showcase of artistry and craftsmanship and features a distinctly American aesthetic through original ironwork commissions by Samuel Yellin and murals painted by artists Robert Winthrop Chanler and Everett Shinn.  Planting Fields is included in the National Register of Historic Places.  Learn more at www.plantingfields.org
