Hops are Tops at New Catskills Breweries

New microbreweries are cropping up in the Catskills, offering beer lovers more and more handcrafted, special batch brews to quaff. Create a mini-brewery tour and stop at Greene County's star breweries, including two new locations:

• Rip Van Winkle Brewing Company, located in Catskill at Angelo's Pizzeria & Brewery, combines the best of both worlds, namely, great food and good beer. Brewmaster Nat Collins provides tours of the brewing operation upon request. Sample brews with names inspired by the Catskills, including Palenville Pale Ale, Mama Mia Maibock, Kiskatom Brown Ale and Mountain House Light.

• Honey Hollow Brewing Co. in Earlton bills itself as a "sub-nano, do-it-ourselves, farm brewery." Open Fridays and Saturdays, Brewmaster Matty Taormina crafts small batch beers made with ingredients exclusively sourced in New York State, and hops grown in his backyard. Find Honey Hollow brews at the Wednesday farmers' market at the Coxsackie Riverfront Park.

Continue a brewery tour at Cave Mountain Brewery Company in Windham, Greene County's first brewery, and at Crossroads Brewing Company in Athens. For a complete list of Greene County's breweries, go to
