Auburn, NY (Dec. 21, 2022) -- Artists age 16 and up can learn or refine their skills by signing up for several clay and watercolor classes this winter and spring at the Schweinfurth Art Center. They include two clay throwing classes, one hand-building clay class that culminates with a sculpture for your garden, and two watercolor classes.
“These classes are for people at all skills levels, so this is a great opportunity for people to experience a new media or try out new techniques,” said Program Coordinator Julia Banfi. “All the classes are taught by teaching artists.”
The clay classes include:
Winter Wheel Throwing with Mike Hughes: 2 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Feb. 7 to April 11, 2023. No class Feb. 21 and April 4.
In this eight-week series, students will learn the foundational skills for throwing pots on the wheel. Instructor Mike Hughes, who received an MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology, has been teaching wheel throwing in the Syracuse area for eight years.

Lawn and Garden Sculpture: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 9 to April 6, 2023. No class March 9.
In this eight-week series, students will construct one conservatively-sized garden or lawn sculpture or a small series of such, utilizing ceramic hand-building methods. Instructor Kristina Flynn has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics and Ceramic Sculpture from Rochester Institute of Technology and has more than 20 years of experience working and teaching in ceramics.

In this eight-week series, students will learn the foundational skills for throwing pots on the wheel. Instructor John Smolenski, a Rochester Institute of Technology graduate, taught high school art at Skaneateles Central Schools for 29 years, where he developed the ceramics program.

Exploring Color with Watercolor: 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays from Feb. 28 through April 11. No class April 4.
In this six-week workshop, students will explore different color compositions, working with a new color scheme each week and explore applying that scheme to your art. Instructor Eric Shute has education and art degrees from SUNY New Paltz and Syracuse University and has studied painting techniques with nationally known artists.
COST: Schweinfurth members $180, nonmembers $190
Watercolor Sampler Workshop: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 15 and 16, 2023.
In this two-day workshop, students will try transparent watercolor, water soluble pencil, water soluble crayon, and ink wash and discover which media suits them best. Instructor Wynn Yarrow is a teaching artist and an artist-in-residence at the Rockwell Museum in Corning, NY.
