Schweinfurth Art Center summer campsAuburn, NY (June 5, 2020) - The Schweinfurth Art Center has switched its summer art camps to online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is currently accepting registrations. The camps will let children explore art through Mail Art, Map Making, Animal Habitats, and more.

"We have had many discussions with our staff, teachers, and board about how to safely hold art camp this summer in light of COVID-19," said Schweinfurth Education Director Deirdre Aureden. "To fully ensure the safety of all, we needed to move the camps to an online platform, and we are very lucky in that almost all of our scheduled teachers have had experience teaching online this spring."

The two-hour classes will be held online via Zoom, and each session runs from Monday through Friday. There are two sessions each day grouped by age: Children ages 6 to 10 meet 10 a.m. to noon and students ages 11 to 14 meet 1 to 3 p.m. Each week of art camp has a different topic, so children can take all three weeks and not have duplicate activities.

Here are the topics for each week:

July 20-24 Morning Camp: Mapping the World
Campers will explore different types of real and imagined maps through art experiences each day via a group Zoom meeting and individual "studio" visits and group check-ins. Projects will integrate a range of materials and mediums, from drawing with pastels, to painting with watercolor, to creating sculptures with wire and clay.
10 a.m. to noon, for ages 6 to 10
Teacher: Michele Ridgeway

July 20-24 Afternoon Camp: Navigating the World through Maps
Students will experiment with different techniques for mapping real and imagined spaces. Create patterns with printed objects and letters, create a self-portrait that maps the "interior life" of the artist, and create a sculpture or other work that maps something you invent or dream. Campers will meet via Zoom each day as a group and individually through "studio" visits.
1 to 3 p.m., for ages 11 to 16
Teacher: Michele Ridgeway

Aug. 3-7 Morning Camp: Art and Nature
Create glowing gems, oil pastel leaf paintings, and Zen-tangle animals. Design a layered Ombre Landscape and your own dream catcher while studying the stars of the summer skies. This online camp will include sharing circles and games to keep students' bodies and minds feeling creative and inspired.
10 a.m. to noon, for ages 6 to 10
Teacher: Warner Varno

Aug. 3-7 Afternoon Camp: You've Got Mail!
Students will use collage, found text, photography, and line art to create postcards that can be mailed to class members, family, or friends. A final project will be to send postcards to the Schweinfurth Art Center for exhibit when the center reopens. This course will include short video tutorials, and campers will meet on Zoom to work on projects in real time.
1 to 3 p.m., for ages 11 to 16
Teacher: Didi Leavitt

Aug. 10-14 Morning Camp: Animal Explorations
Spend the week exploring animals and their habitats around the globe through art. We will create using all kids of different mediums including clay, paper and paint. Learn as we have fun delving into the animal worlds of our country, Australia and more!
10 a.m. to noon, for ages 6 to 10
Teacher: Joy LoPiccolo

Aug. 10-14 Afternoon Camp: Habitats, Landscapes, and Becoming a Naturalist
Find the joy of nature by collecting plant specimens and observing animals in their natural habitat. Experiment with glue, wax resists, and salt to develop your skills in watercolor. And collage a bird's-eye view of a landscape, sourcing images of remote places online.
1 to 3 p.m., for ages 11 to 16
Teacher: Madeline Bartley

Because of the change in format, and with the support of the Everett Foundation, the art center has reduced the tuition cost to $50 for Schweinfurth members and $60 for nonmembers. Each enrolled student will be given a list of supplies to collect ahead of time. Teachers will limit the list to items that campers are likely to have at home already or can be easily purchased.
