Sackets Harbor, NY -- The Great Lakes Seaway Trail Discovery Center has announced summer hours. The three-story, nine room interpretive center at Ray and West Main Streets on the Sackets Harbor waterfront will be open daily from 10 am to 5 pm from July 1 through September 7, 2009. The historic limestone structure built in 1817 as the Union Hotel now holds exhibits that inspire tourism along the 518-mile freshwater shoreline byway that is one of America's Byways and a National Recreation Trail. Travel themes for the Great Lakes Seaway Trail include maritime heritage, 28 historic lighthouses, freshwater scuba diving, Niagara Falls, coastal agriculture, the 1000 Islands, birdwatching, architecture, famous American hometowns and workplaces, and world-class sportfishing. Among the events happening on the byway is New York State's Signature Event for the 250th commemoration of the French and Indian War July 3-5 with more than 2,300 reenactors at Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown.
