Sugaring OffRe-enactors, demonstrations, and crafts will run throughout the day starting at 11:00am

Kingston, NY – The snow thawing outside means that it is maple sugar season, and Senate House State Historic Site invites all to its first event of the season, Sugaring Off, on Saturday, April 4th from 11 AM to 4 PM. The event features demonstrations and crafts relating to maple sugaring, as practiced in 18th century America.

Visitors should get some of the feel of an 18th century sugar camp, where colonists would spend several days in the woods to harvest and process maple sugar for the season, using techniques adopted from indigenous peoples. The site will host re-enactors from the 1st and 3rd Ulster Militias, who will be demonstrating 18th century camp life. There will be live demonstrations of boiling maple sap down to syrup, and Nick Martin of Minnewaska State Park Preserve will be making of jack wax candy to sample. There will also be hands-on crafts for visitors of all ages and musical entertainment by singer Mark Rust. This family friendly event is free and open to the public.
