Board Also Confirms Break-Even for 2012; Approves $8.4 Million Budget for 2013
Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - Noting that its 2013 Season is shaping up to be "extraordinary," Saratoga Performing Arts Center President Marcia J. White announced today at a meeting of SPAC's Board of Directors that SPAC will launch its "Building of a Season" programming announcement series next Thursday, December 13 at spac.org. Each week, SPAC will announce online, a selection of artists, works and events that will be part of the upcoming season with accompanying multi-media features including performance videos and interviews, articles, reviews and more. White said that the series, which debuted last year, generated significant positive feedback and increased off-season traffic to SPAC's website by nearly 60 percent.
"The stature and scope of the artists, programming and events that we present each season is truly remarkable. In 2013, more than 700 classical artists will be part of our season and more than 130 masterpieces will be performed live," said Marcia J. White, SPAC's President & Executive Director. "The format and timing of ‘Building of a Season' encourages people to explore the breadth and depth of that artistry, which ultimately enhances appreciation of the programs they'll experience here at SPAC. In this digital age, the series is also a powerful tool for educating people about the classical performing arts, which is a key component of SPAC's mission."
White also explained that announcing programming and artist selections across genres helps underscore the rich diversity of SPAC's programming which encompasses jazz, ballet, modern dance, orchestra, chamber music, opera, cabaret and rock/pop. She noted that unlike many presenters who present one or two art forms, SPAC's season can resemble a "jigsaw puzzle in its complexity and interconnectedness."
In addition to its website, SPAC will publicize the weekly announcements through various digital channels including Facebook, Twitter, email and its digital sign on Route 50. White noted that announcing the programming online gives SPAC an opportunity to highlight each artist with streamed videos, YouTube interviews, photo galleries, media articles and reviews. The venue has built a strong online presence in recent years. In 2012, there were over one million visitors to SPAC's website.
In anticipation of the programming announcements, SPAC released the following dates for the 2013 season:
Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival: June 29 - 30
New York City Ballet: July 9 - 13
National Ballet of Canada: July 16 - 18
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet: July 24 - 25
The Philadelphia Orchestra: August 7 - 24
Saratoga Chamber Music Festival: August 4 - 20
Live at the Algonquin Cabaret Series: July 19 - August 3
Members of SPAC's board also approved an $8.4 million budget for the 2013 fiscal year and confirmed earlier projections that SPAC will finish 2012 by operationally breaking even.
It was noted that although 2012 programming costs increased by approximately 10 percent, or $400,000, income gains in other areas helped offset these expenses, including higher income from the jazz festival and from Live Nation's record-breaking season. SPAC also achieved an additional six percent rise in membership revenue.
