Play it Forward Vertical Challenge Charity Event is scheduled for February 28th. The event consists of a Vertical Challenge, a Tribute Ride, a Rail Jam and an Auction. Participants are encouraged to fundraise with proceeds to benefit the Ellicottville/Great Valley Ambulance, the Holiday Valley and Holimont Adaptive Programs, The Ellicottville Food Pantry, Almost Home Animal Shelter and Camp Good Days. Winter Carnival is scheduled for March 14th and 15th. The favorite events are back and better than ever, including Saturday's Kid's Scavenger Hunt, Sunday's Costume Parade and Dummy Downhill. Parties, cookouts and entertainment take place throughout the weekend, featuring Sunday morning's Ski Patrol free pancake breakfast on the top of the mountain, the Mountain Crew's giant Snow Bar at the base of Yodeler and dancing to the Buffalo 5 on Saturday and the Party Squad band on Sunday. Proceeds from the Snow Bar benefit several local charities and youth programs.
The Mardi Gras Parade in Ellicottville at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday is a highlight of weekend where everyone and anyone is invited to march or enter a float
Holiday Valley lift attendants and staff will create snow sculptures and decorate their departments to the delight of the guests.
Holiday Valley Resort will host the Freestyle Eastern Qualifying Series Championships this March 20th through 22nd. One hundred sixty competitors from the northeastern US will compete in moguls, aerials and slopestyle disciplines. The Eastern Qualifying Series is the highest level of competition at the entry level of Freestyle Skiing. The emphasis is on having fun while improving the skiers' freestyle skills.
The Northwind Super G on March 22nd is a race open to skiers of all ages. A Super G course is set on the Northwind slope and the fastest time wins. A radar gun is used to clock the speed of each racer at the fastest spot on the course. This event takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The annual Pond Skimming Spring Party on March 28th is day of fun in the sun with the actual Pond Skimming competition starting at 1:00 p.m. Pond Skimmers wearing outrageous costumes ski down the slope and attempt to skim across an ice water filled pond at the bottom, but those who are unsuccessful usually get the most applause. The events take place on the Yodeler slope.
The Spring Open Slalom on March 28th is a USSA sanctioned slalom race for age groups U16, U18 and U21. Racers from all over the East coast will compete to better their standings in USSA competition. Several up-and-coming racers have competed in past years, including Olympians Ted Ligety and Lindsey Kildow Vonn. It is an exciting competition to watch from the base of Edelweiss slope.
The Golf Season will begin on April 10th, assuming warm spring weather eventually arrives to melt the snow off the course. Generally the front nine, located on the flat area adjacent to the Inn at Holiday Valley, opens first. Several fairways and even a few tees of the back nine are under the snow of the ski slopes and they will open later in the month of April.
