Tupper Lake, N.Y. — In 2018 Tupper Lake Tinman participants contributed $312,650 in direct spending to the region according to this year’s survey and direct expenditure results. One of the longest-running triathlons in the U.S., the race celebrated its 36th year with a field of 504 athletes on June 23.
The survey, which was sponsored by the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST), was distributed to this year’s race participants via email and by a notification in their race packet.
Additional results indicated that 2018 Tupper Lake Tinman participants were evenly split between first-timers who plan to participate in the race again and those who have raced it before. The majority stayed in Tupper Lake for this year’s event, and took advantage of the outdoor recreation and other attractions in the Adirondacks.
“The Tinman brings athletes and their families to our region, hopefully creating potential new travelers to Tupper Lake who have discovered how much the area has to offer,” said ROOST’s Tupper Lake Marketing Manager Katie Stuart.
Forty-seven percent of the survey respondents said this was their first time participating in the race, and over 82 percent of the respondents said they’d consider or plan on visiting again outside of the race itself,” said Stuart.
“These survey results underscore the value of this race to Tupper Lake,” said Tupper Lake Mayor Paul Maroun. “With entries increasing in recent years and participants from New York, neighboring states and as far away as California, the success of this race is yet another sign of our village’s ongoing upward evolution.”
Tupper Lake Town Supervisor Patricia Littlefield agreed with the mayor.
“From the carbo load dinner at the Civic Center, to the variety of lodging utilized, to exposure to the race course itself, the race has significant town- and region-wide impact,” said Littlefield. “It was certainly a very busy week in Tupper Lake, and these survey results confirm that.”
The Tupper Lake Tinman Triathlon is one of the most popular and scenic races in northern New York and is sanctioned by USA Triathlon.
