Albany, N.Y. – Classes in chair taping, basket weaving, and woven holiday ornaments will be taught on Saturdays at the Shaker Heritage Society.
On Saturday, August 19, (10:00-1:00), local artist, Elizabeth Lee, will lead a workshop in constructing Shaker chair seats using cotton tape. Participants will need to bring their own chair with all old chair tape/seat removed as well as fresh chair tape. (To determine how much chair tape needed, please visit www.shakerworkshops.com.) $25 per participant. Pre-registration with payment is required by August 15th. Space is limited.
On Saturday, September 16, (10:00-2:00), renowned basket maker, Sandy Salada, will teach how to make a lattice basket. This basket has a square plain weave bottom then weaves diagonally up the sides to a round top. A fun and easy basket, suitable for ages 14 and up. $25 per participant plus $20 materials fee. Pre-registration with payment is required. Space is limited.
On Saturday, December 9, (10:00-1:00), Ms. Salada will guide participants in making two woven holiday ornaments from three choices offered: woven reindeer from reed or ash, an eight pointed snowflake made in reed, or a puffy heart ornament made in reed. Perfect for home or as a wonderfully unique, handmade holiday gift. No prior experience is necessary. This 3-hour workshop is suitable for ages 14 and up. $25 per participant plus $10 materials fee. Pre-registration with payment is required. Space is limited.
These programs will take place at the 1848 Shaker Meeting House at the site of America’s first Shaker settlement. The historic site is adjacent to Albany International Airport off of Heritage Lane.
