Thomas Cole - Long Lake Historic MarkerLong Lake, N.Y. – A New York State Historic Marker was recently erected at the Long Lake Town Beach to commemorate a historical visit in 1846 by noted Hudson River School founder and painter, Thomas Cole.

The newly installed sign is located at the Long Lake Town Beach, 1258 Main Street. It features historic signage, funded by a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation for the New York State Historic Marker Program.

This effort was spearheaded by Long Lake part-time resident, Historian and Adjunct Professor at SUNY New Paltz, P. Matthew DeLaMater and Long Lake Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director, Alexandra Roalsvig, with support of the Long Lake Town Board.

In 2015 DeLaMater researched and presented a lecture for the Long Lake Historical Society featuring Thomas Cole’s visit to Long Lake in 1846 identifying works featuring landscapes reflected in Cole’s visit to Long Lake.

Thomas Cole was an American artist and is regarded as the founder of the Hudson River School, an American art movement that flourished in the mid-19th century. Cole's Hudson River School, as well as his own work, was known for its realistic and detailed portrayal of American landscape and wilderness, which feature themes of romanticism.

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation is a grant-making foundation based in Syracuse, N.Y. One of its initiatives is helping communities celebrate their history. The program commemorates historic people, places or things during the years 1740 to 1919. The Town of Long Lake received $1100 for the grant for the newly installed sign in February of 2020. Since 2006, the Foundation has funded over 875 roadside markers and plaques in multiple states. Grants cover the cost of a marker, pole and shipping.

Plans for an application are coming together for a grant application for the Hamlet of Raquette Lake pending the completion of roadwork by the NYSDOT along the NYS Route 28 corridor.
