Mirror Lake Inn Resort and SpaLake Placid, N.Y. – Just to make sure everyone was paying attention, Mother Nature reminded us last week that winter is upon us in Upstate New York. A 10-inch snowfall got us thinking that skiing, boarding, skating, hockey and the rest are closer than we think in the Adirondack Mountains.

Whiteface Mountain, just 10 miles from the Mirror Lake Inn, is poised for a Thanksgiving opening, weather permitting. The Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa in Lake Placid is ready as well. Last season, the AAA Four Diamond property debuted a new onsite ski shop manned by Olympic silver and bronze medalist Andrew Weibrecht, and his brother, Ethan, a former college ski racer. The concept resonated well with guests, so this year, not only will the service be repeated, but the inn has added a brand-new fleet of top of the line premium ski rentals from Head. No need to schlep gear from home – just reach out to Andrew or Ethan in advance for personalized, on property service. Then take your stepped-up gear and make an appointment to Ski With Andrew. If cross-country skiing is more your style, the Mirror Lake Inn offers Ski With Andrea - that’s Andrea Henkel Burke, a four-time Olympic medalist in biathlon.

SAFETY IS THE NEW LUXURY

After a three-month closure in the spring, the hotel, Four Diamond rated the past 36 straight years, reopened on June 26 with resounding success thanks to significant investments made by ownership in COVID health and safety protocols. A total of $500,000 was committed to hospital grade Ultraviolet C light-emitting equipment, electrostatic sprayers, ceiling fans, hand sanitizers, thermal imaging, reception area separation, employee use of PPE equipment, temperature checks, expanded outdoor seating and the staff training that accompanies all of this. Guest and employee safety continue to be mission one.

In recent weeks, more new concepts have been undertaken at the Mirror Lake Inn:

  • Three new outdoor fire pits will help you relax and warm up after a day in the Adirondack great outdoors.
  • A newly installed ice-skating rink will be located on our private tennis court.
  • Updated and ever-evolving COVID-19 procedures, equipment and tactics to keep you safe and healthy.
  • 48-hour cancelation.

  • The Mirror Lake Inn app for iPhone and Android devices to facilitate remote check-in, keyless room entry and much more.

Lake Placid Olympic venues have also embarked on significant updates to welcome visitors this season. For starters, snowmaking capacity has been enhanced by 150 percent at Whiteface; there is a new mid-station lodge at the 1980 Olympic Mountain; the Cloudsplitter Gondola has been refurbished with new motor drives and new gondola cabins; and there’s a new chairlift at the Bear’s Den learning area.

Skiers and riders should note that lodge occupancies at Whiteface Mountain will be restricted to 50 percent, and ticket sales will be capped at 75 percent during peak holiday periods so please book ahead.

At Mount Van Hoevenberg, site of the Olympic Sports Complex, cross country skiers and snowshoers will see a significant snowmaking operation in play for the first time; there are new lodge facilities with access to the Nordic ski network as well as the sliding track (bobsled, luge, skeleton) and hiking trails; and the Cliffside Coaster, the longest ride on rails in North America, running adjacent to the 1980 Olympic bobsled track.

So with all of this in place, the stage is set for a safe, healthy and fun outdoor season. The seven-acre resort thanks everyone in advance for their patronage and compliance with COVID protocols not only at the hotel but in the village as well. As Mirror Lake Inn owner Ed Weibrecht stated during the summer, the inn hopes to relax some of these measures in the future, but at the moment, the most important goal is keeping everyone safe.

Hotel owners, managers and staff hope you and yours are in the best of health.
