Buffalo and Ellicottville

Architecture, Art, and Arboretum

Shop in the eclectic Elmwood neighborhood home of the Albright Knox Art Gallery with its outstanding collection of modern art and the Burchfield Penney Art Center at SUNY Buffalo State, which includes the world's largest public collection of works by acclaimed watercolorist Charles E. Burchfield.

Sample some of Buffalo's classic foods with a beef on weck from Charlie the Butcher's and an order of wings from the world-famous Anchor Bar, home of the original chicken wings. Buffalo is full of dining options from high end to food trucks so pick your pleasure and dig in.

Spend the night at one of Buffalo's downtown hotel properties to fully experience Buffalo's resurgence.

Travel Rte 400 south to East Aurora and take a step back in time at Vidler's Five & Dime, a charming third-generation family business now the largest 5&10 variety store in the world.

Head over to the National Historic Landmark Roycroft Inn and Campus, a fascinating authentic American Arts and Crafts community featuring artisans working in jewelry making, screen printing, bookmaking, letter press printing and more! The Inn is also a great stop for lunch or dinner.

Depart for Arcade taking Rte 16 south and step aboard the Arcade & Attica Railroad's vintage excursion train for a leisurely trip through colorful rolling hills. Cider and homemade donuts await you upon return at the Currier's Depot.

Head south again on Rte 16 and take Rte 242 to Ellicottville. During October, experience a Nightmare Hayride that's "guaranteed to scare." Explore the haunted barn, corn maze and vortex tunnel if you dare!

Enjoy the Ellicottville Brewing Company's craft brew and fine dinner menu. Then overnight at the Edelweiss Lodge (716/699-2734), Kelly House Lodge (716/699-4515), or the Black Dog Lodge Bed & Breakfast (716/ 699-6900).

Head north on Route 219 to Ashford Hollow and Griffis Sculpture Park to explore over 250 larger-than-life sculptures dispersed through miles of hiking trails.

Just south of Ellicottville, on Rte 98, is Pumpkinville, a 200-acre farm featuring a cider mill, corn maze, pick-your-own pumpkin patch and petting zoo.
