Begin on the eastern bank of the Hudson River just 25 miles from mid-town Manhattan. Visit some famous historic mansions with river views in Tarrytown.

Sunnyside, the home of 19th-century author Washington Irving, features stepped gables, ancient weathervanes and gardens. A National Historic Site, Lyndhurst covers 67 acres and boasts beautiful gardens, a greenhouse and carriage house. Kykuit was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, and features antiques and art, fine ceramics, and extensive gardens.  Visit to plan your trip to these gems since admission may be by timed tours only.

Head west on I-87 across the Tappan Zee Bridge to Sterling Forest State Park in Tuxedo, a 19,000-acre park with hiking trails, fishing, 125 species of birds, 810 species of plants, visitors' center and guided hikes.

Take I-87 north to Exit 16 and Rte 17 West to Exit 127 to Sugar Loaf Art & Craft Village in Sugar Loaf, an original arts and crafts hamlet with dozens of shops and galleries. Overnight in Goshen or Middletown.

Cross the Hudson River via the Tappan Zee Bridge and travel 60 minutes northwest to Storm King Art Center in New Windsor. Follow I-87 to exit 16 - Harriman, then take Route 32 north for about 6 miles. Follow the blue signs directing you to Orrs Mills Road, then make a left on Old Pleasant Hill Road.  Allow a minimum of 2 to 3 hours to experience this world renowned 500-acre outdoor contemporary sculpture park open Wed-Sun from April-November.

A 15-minute ride down Orrs Mills Road and Route 94 to Washingtonville will bring you to Brotherhood, America's Oldest Winery. Tour the huge underground cellars and taste a flight of wines at this historic landmark founded in 1839.

If time permits, follow Route 94 west to Kings Highway to browse hand-crafted goods in the quaint Sugar Loaf Art and Craft Village in Chester. The shops keep independent hours but most are open until 6pm, Wed-Sun.  For evening fun, check to see if there's a performance scheduled at the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center.

Heading back south, stop to explore nature and history at Sterling Forest State Park in Tuxedo. This 19,000 acre park features hiking trails, fishing, bird watching, historic iron mining history displays, and a beautiful visitors center overlooking Sterling Lake. If you happen to visit on a Saturday or Sunday, you may catch one of the special lectures or guided hikes.

Go east on Quaker Ave to Rte 9W north, then to Rte 218 south. Travel through the town of Cornwall-on-Hudson, continuing high above the Hudson River on the scenic Storm King Highway. Follow the route into West Point and see the United States Military Academy at West Point. (Check their schedule before traveling)
